Senior/Principal Backend Engineer – Java
Location: London or Edinburgh (Hybrid)
Our client is a specialist financial services consultancy, working with a Tier-1 financial institution and building a modern, online-only banking product from the ground up. As part of a major scale-up of their engineering organisation, they are seeking experienced Java backend engineers at Senior and Principal level to join squads shaping the platform's architecture and delivery.
The Role
- Design and build microservices and event-driven backend services using Java 11/17+ and Spring Boot
- Work within small, focused squads with direct ownership over architecture decisions and delivery
- Deploy and manage services on AWS, using modern CI/CD practices
- Collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, and other engineers in a fast-moving agile environment
- Contribute to architecture discussions and technical direction as the platform and team scale
- At Principal level, support wider engineering initiatives such as mentoring, RFP input, and technical leadership across squads

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
