Senior Laboratory Manager – Food & Nutrition

Location: Hertford, UK Employer: Azelis


Azelis is looking for an experienced laboratory leader with a passion for formulation and innovation. We are seeking a Senior Laboratory Manager – Food & Nutrition to lead laboratory operations and play a key role in delivering technical excellence across customer-driven projects.

In this role, you will oversee formulation development, sample/prototype creation, testing, and product characterisation, collaborating with commercial teams, including Sales, Product Management, and Marketing to bring new concepts to life while maintaining high technical standards.


Job Purpose

The Laboratory Manager supervises dedicated laboratory activities, including formulation development, sample/prototype creation, testing, and product characterisation, supporting the commercial team (e.g., Sales, Product Management, and Principal Development Managers). You will contribute to the innovation process with your technical expertise, ensure accurate documentation and record-keeping, and act as an information bridge between teams.

Main Accountabilities

Formulation Development & Optimization

  • Manage and develop customer-demand-driven products.
  • Evaluate stability tests and support manufacturing/scale-up to refine formulations.

Information Sharing & Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate records compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as the technical interface for principals and customers.
  • Contribute to best practice sharing within the EMEA technical community.

Training & Consulting

  • Train customers and internal colleagues on products and applications.
  • Support marketing, sales, and customer/supplier events.
  • Resolve customer problems in collaboration with sales.

Health & Safety

  • Oversee all laboratory health and safety procedures.
  • Continuously improve HSE standards.
  • Ensure compliance and training for all team members.

Sustainability

  • Implement the Group’s Sustainability Strategy, delivering actionable KPIs.
  • Collaborate with marketing teams to identify consumer trends and develop innovative, sustainable concepts.
  • Lead regional project activities, mentor new team members, and share best practices within the EMEA technical community.

Experience, Skills & Education

Qualifications & Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., chemistry, food science).
  • Extensive food and nutrition sector knowledge, including formulation experience.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience in laboratory management.
  • Strong influence and leadership abilities to drive results through teams.
  • Capacity to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken).
  • Skilled in advanced IT tools and software.
