Senior Lab Technician

Senior Lab Technician (Part-Time) – Donnington Grove

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic, team-orientated Senior Lab Technician to join our team at Donnington Grove on a part-time basis.

Donnington Grove Veterinary Group (based in Newbury) is part of Inspiring Vet Care / Evidensia. We pride ourselves on:

Practice Highlights

  • Multidisciplinary veterinary laboratory, analysing diverse animal samples using modern diagnostic technologies
  • Exposure to:
    • Clinical chemistry
    • Haematology
    • Serology
    • Microscopy
    • Cytology
    • Parasitology
    • Microbiology
    • PCR
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), including:
    • Sample registration
    • Result reporting
  • Key operations:
    • Instrument maintenance and calibration
    • Quality controls
    • Stock management
    • Waste disposal procedures

Responsibilities

As a Senior Lab Technician, you will deliver accurate, reliable diagnostic results supporting veterinary professionals in providing executive patient care.

Within a multidisciplinary laboratory, your role includes:

  • Performing tests in clinical chemistry, haematology, serology, microbiology, and PCR
  • Supporting daily operations, including:
    • Sample processing
    • Result reporting via LIMS
    • Equipment maintenance
    • Quality control
    • Stock management

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine tests: PCR, serology, biochemistry, immunoassays, result validation
  • Manage samples:
    • Receipt, processing, storage, and disposal
    • Maintain quality control and turnaround times
  • Maintain laboratory standards:
    • Equipment, reagents, and stock levels (adhering to SOPs)
  • Resolve technical/quality issues: Escalate to senior staff as needed
  • Support broader team functions:
    • Prioritise workloads
    • Communicate with clients
    • Train colleagues

Working Pattern

  • Part-time: 35 hours/week
  • Hours: Tuesday–Friday (8:30am – 5pm) + weekend cover (Saturday 8am–12pm)
  • Duties: Bank holiday coverage during the equine season

Requirements

You’ll excel in this role if you’re a detail-oriented and motivated lab professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and values accuracy. Ideal candidates bring:

  • Strong technical skills in clinical biochemistry, haematology, serology and PCR testing
  • Excellent organisational skills: Self-motivated, with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet time-sensitive deadlines
  • Clear communication: Confidently explain technical details to colleagues at all levels (verbal/written)
  • Problem-solving: High accuracy, attention to detail, and manual dexterity
  • Preferred:
    • Experience in veterinary or medical diagnostic labs
    • Knowledge of animal diseases relevant to the testing service

Salary: £36,000 – £45,000 per annum
