Senior Lawyer – Litigation
Law and Governance Service, Milton Keynes City Council
Job Introduction
This is a rewarding role where your legal expertise will directly protect the Council, support our communities, and help deliver lawful, accountable public services.
The Litigation Team safeguards the interests of Milton Keynes City Council by:
- Managing all contentious legal matters across the organisation
- Providing strategic advice and robust representation on disputes, enforcement, and regulatory compliance
- Supporting every council department to act lawfully, confidently, and proportionately
Our work spans civil and criminal jurisdictions, including:
- Possession proceedings
- Complex litigation
- Prosecution of offences in criminal courts
By upholding legal standards and effective enforcement, we protect the Council’s assets, reputation, and statutory responsibilities.
As a Senior Lawyer, you’ll manage a diverse caseload of medium and high-level litigation matters and work closely with the Principal Lawyer, while also mentoring junior colleagues. This role ensures the Council achieves its objectives and delivers fair outcomes for residents in Milton Keynes.
Part-time/hybrid working may be available following an assessment (minimum of one day per week office presence).

Main Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Provide high-quality legal advice to support the Council’s objectives in litigation matters
- Manage caseloads of medium and high-level contentious cases from start to finish
- Advocate in court independently where applicable to the jurisdiction
- Build strong relationships with:
- Council departments
- Barristers
- External solicitors
- Supervise junior lawyers in the Litigation Team
- Contribute to team performance, service improvement, and KPI targets
Ideal Candidate
Qualifications & Experience
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Institute of Legal Executives Fellow (or equivalent)
- Demonstrated expertise in local government litigation
Key Skills & Attitudes
- Ability to analyse complex, high-stakes or high-value cases with clinical judgement
- ** Exceptional communication skills** (both written and verbal)
- Collaborative leadership with strong mentoring abilities
