About the School
The School of Materials Science and Engineering ranks among the top materials programs in the Asia-Pacific region. It offers:
- Undergraduate programs: Materials Science and Engineering (Honours)
- Combined degrees: Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Commerce
This Senior Lecturer (Level C) role requires research excellence, cutting-edge teaching, and a commitment to educational innovation.
Role Overview
Salary Range: $155K – $178K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading Type: Fixed-term (18 months) | Full-time (35 hours/week) Location: Sydney, Australia
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Apply a reflective teaching philosophy that inspires student engagement.
- Deliver classes, assess learning outcomes, and support undergraduate/postgraduate students.
- Design innovative learning activities, assessments, and feedback mechanisms.
- Guide individual students (1:1 consults) and cohorts for employability and academic growth.
- Oversee academic quality assurance and course administration as the Course Authority.
- Engage with industry, contribute to professional development, and seek education funding.

Research
- Lead high-impact research in mechanical behaviour of materials, materials failure, structural design, or advanced processing.
- Establish a nationally recognised research track record.
- Attract peer recognition and grow a research network.
- Secure nationally competitive grants/fellowships.
- Mentor HDR (Higher Degree Research) students, supervise to timely completion, and participate in HDR review panels.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead School meetings, seminars, and committees.
- Align with UNSW’s Code of Conduct and Values.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety policies.
Requirements for Success
Qualifications & Experience
- PhD in polymer science, polymer engineering, or materials engineering (or equivalent industry experience).
- Proven teaching excellence:
- Experience in pedagogical design, undergraduate/postgraduate course delivery, and industry-academic collaboration.
- Track record in curriculum development and student equity/diversity.
- Research leadership:
- Focus on mechanical behaviour, advanced processing, or failure analysis.
- National/international reputation with a high-impact publication record.
- Ability to secure external funding (grants, collaborations).
