Senior Lecturer

Role Summary
Title: Senior Lecturer (Level C) Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia only Employment Type: Full-time, Fixed Term (18 months) Salary: $155K – $178K p.a. + 17% superannuation + leave loading Hours: 35 hours per week
This position is based at the School of Materials Science and Engineering—ranked among the top Materials programs in the Asia-Pacific, trusted for its excellence in research and education across mechanical behaviour, materials failure, structural design, and processing.
The Senior Lecturer (Level C) will drive high-quality research, advance educational innovation, and mentor students in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The role involves teaching excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and maintaining a strong national/international research profile, including peer recognition, funding portfolio development, and HDR supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching Leadership
- Apply a critically reflective teaching philosophy that enhances student learning, using a spectrum of pedagogical approaches.
- Deliver lectures, assess student work, and support undergraduate and postgraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
- Design engaging learning activities, assessments, and resources, leveraging diverse teaching environments.
- Foster student progression through one-to-one mentoring and cohort engagement to achieve employability outcomes.
- Act as Course Authority, ensuring academic quality assurance and administering learning programs effectively.
Industry and Professional Engagement
- Build and maintain industry and professional connections, contributing to professional development activities.
- Identify and secure internal education grant funding to elevate teaching quality.
- Actively participate in School/Faculty meetings, chairs seminars, and sits on relevant committees.

Research and Innovation Leadership
- Establish an independent research track record, making nationally recognised contributions in specialisation areas.
- Publish high-quality, high-impact research, aligning with discipline norms (e.g., polymer science, materials engineering).
- Attract peer recognition and develop national/international research networks.
- Secure and lead competitive research grants (or research fellowships) from external and industry sources.
- Establish thriving research groups, scale expertise and methods appropriate to advanced processing and material testing.
- Supervise HDR students to timely completion, mentor colleagues, and contribute to HDR review panels.
Organisational Contributions
- Adhere to UNSW’s Code of Conduct and Values, ensuring ethical and fair practice.
- Comply with all university health and safety policies, safeguarding both self and colleagues.
- Model diversity, inclusion, and equity with a commitment to student support and equality initiatives.
About the Successful Applicant (Selection Criteria)
To meet the ** Career Levels Framework (CLF 8)** and fulfil this role successfully, you will demonstrate:
Education & Academic Expertise
- A PhD in polymer science and engineering or materials engineering, supplemented by relevant industry work experience.
Teaching Excellence
- Proven experience in teaching and curriculum design, including:
- Developing and delivering innovative UG/PG courses (with a focus on mechanical behaviour, failure analysis, structural design, and processing).
- High-impact approaches using educational technology and online teaching methods.
- Evidence of enhanced student learning outcomes through evaluation tools (e.g., student evaluations, peer assessment).
- Passion for educational innovation, indigenous and curriculum development improvement.

Research Contributions
- Strong track record in research excellence, particularly in mechanical behavior and advanced processing, with high-quality publications.
- Commitment to continuously achieving research innovation.
Industry & WIL Integration
- Demonstrated experience with work-integrated learning and active industry collaboration.
- Ability to inspire diverse students, supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Organisational and Leadership Skills
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and collaboration abilities.
- Capacity to work across disciplines and build high-performance teams.
- Proven success in obtaining funding for learning and teaching initiatives.
- Understanding of UNSW’s values, policies, and compliance frameworks, including health and safety.
Student Mentoring and Supervision
- Experience in recruiting and guiding high-calibre students in research and coursework.
- Established record of successful HDR supervision outreach.
