Senior Lecturer in Clinical Legal Education

Salary: £58,225 to £61,759 with progression to £67,468 per annum

About the Role

Newcastle Law School is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Legal Education to join our innovative and inclusive Russell Group teaching Law School. Our focus is on pro bono work, student outreach, and community engagement, with an aim to establish a Newcastle Law School Community Clinic.

The successful candidate will drive the development of this new offering. Core responsibilities include:

  • Designing the Community Clinic and setting its strategic direction
  • Shaping real-world legal education to integrate clinical and practice-based learning across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • Developing assessments to nurture propositional, technical, and transferable professional skills
  • Supporting students in co-curricular community engagement activities under the Clinic's umbrella

Candidates may come from either:

  • An academic research background, with experience in pro bono or university-based practice
  • A practicing legal professional background, including leadership and relevant clinic/pro bono experience

Key Accountabilities

Clinical Clinic Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Newcastle Law School Community Clinic including:

    • Strategic direction and oversight
    • Partnership building with external stakeholders (voluntary sector, legal profession, government, NGOs etc)
    • Student recruitment and support for clinic-based work
  • Strengthen industrial connections: ensuring the Clinic is serviced by valid and actionable commercial or public partnerships.

Teaching & Learning

  • Provide a supportive, responsive, and high-quality teaching experience that:

    • Embodies the qualities of outward-facing advocacy
    • Nurtures analytical reasoning, skills, proficiency and applications throughout studies
    • Advances engagement, challenges and inspires students to fulfill their potential
  • Develop clinical, practice-led and pro bono teaching and learning:

    • Curriculum and assessment design
    • Collaboration with colleagues and students in advancing co-/extra-curricular initiatives
    • Direct support for supervised student dissertation and group work
    • Mentor students as academic advisors
  • Maintain professional rigor in teaching and pedagogic practice, incorporating the incorporation of DEI best practices.

General Contributions

  • Act as active members of the Newcastle Law School community, embodying our values in student/staff interactions.
  • Ensure aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion are acknowledged and integral to policies, practices, and research objectives.
  • Support the university in developing diverse perspectives and acting as a change agent to foster an inclusive and equitable work environment.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Substantial professional/practice experience as:

    • An academic legal practitioner
    • Or a pracitating legal professional with hands-on clinic/conmunity-engaged delivery
  • Visceral commitment to experiential legal education with an emphasis on pro bono but welcome inventive, challenging and inclusive approaches.

  • Testimonial evidence of exceptional pedagogical impact embedded in strong disciplinary knowledge, proven engagement in academic research, and demonstrated ability to inspire and challenge learners to discover and realise their potential.

  • A solid leadership record in Higher Education or professional practice with proven experience leveraging pro bono and diversity, equity, and inclusion into relevant programs.

  • Familiarity and prior successful engagement with relevant networks:

    • Legal professionals
    • Community-based organisations
    • Local government or municipal bodies
  • Extensive skills in:

    • Academic supervision of student research (dissertations/group work)
    • Oral and written communication
  • Organizational fluency in planning, project tasks succeeding deadlines, and constructing effective presentations.

  • Capacity to build meaningful relationships both internally and externally strengthening the academic/legal–community nexus.


Qualifications

  • UK qualifying law degree (or overseas equivalent or upward conversion via the GDL pathway)
  • Full UK professional legal qualifying mark with accomplished post-qualification experience (PQE) OR
  • Completed PhD in Law
  • A relevant professional body membership desirable
  • HE teaching qualification (or commitment to achieving equivalent after admission) where appropriate
