Senior Lecturer

Senior Lecturer in Materials Science and Engineering

Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia (Full-Time – Fixed Term: 18 months) Salary: $155K – $178K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading Hours: 35 hours per week Job No: 541146

This role is critically located in Sydney, Australia, enabling you to join a pioneering team dedicated to advancing materials science and education.


About the Role

The Senior Lecturer (Level C) at UNSW will play a pivotal role in:

  • Conducting high-impact research that contributes to global advancements in materials science, particularly in polymer science, mechanical behaviour, and advanced processing.
  • Delivering exemplary teaching and mentorship across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with a focus on mechanical behaviour of materials, materials failure, structural design, and materials processing.
  • Developing innovative educational resources, integrating pedagogical approaches, and aligning curriculum enhancements with industry needs.
  • Building research capacity, supervising high-calibre graduate students, and attracting nationally competitive research funding.
  • Collaborating with industry and professional bodies to ensure alignment between academia and real-world applications.

This is a ** Fixed-Term appointment (18 months )**, offering a competitive salary package and opportunities for significant career growth.

Teaching and Learning

  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and critically reflective practices to inspire and enhance student learning.
  • Teach, assess, and provide feedback for postgraduate and undergraduate materials science programs, adhering to UNSW’s curriculum.
  • Design, develop, and deliver engaging learning activities and resources, incorporating modern pedagogies and educational technologies.
  • Elevate the quality of student outcomes through individualised support and cohort-based guidance, ensuring employability and inclusion.
  • Manage course administration and academic quality assurance as the designated Course Authority.
  • Foster industry-academia links by participating in professional development and collaboration initiatives.

Research and Innovation

  • Make independent, high-impact research contributions, establishing a nationally recognised research profile, especially in polymer science and mechanical behaviour.
  • Lead investigating teams and research projects, securing funding from internal and external sources (e.g., research grants, fellowships).
  • Establish and expand research networks at the national and international level, gaining peer recognition.
  • Mentor Higher Degree Research (HDR) students and contribute to HDR review panels.
  • Efficiently leverage research outcomes to secure partnerships with industry and government.

Leadership and Engagement

  • Exemplify UNSW’s Code of Conduct and Values through ethical leadership and collaboration.
  • Contribute to school/faculty committees and participate actively in professional seminars.
  • Lead internal education funding application efforts and collaborate with colleagues to improve educational processes.
  • Advocate for student equity, diversity, and inclusion, supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Align teaching and research practices with health and safety policies, ensuring a secure working environment.

Ideal Candidate: Selection Criteria

To be considered for this role, applicants must demonstrate the following:

Academic and Research Qualifications

  • A PhD in polymer science, materials engineering, or a related field, with relevant professional experience.
  • Proven publication record and high-impact research in polymer science or materials engineering, particularly in mechanical behaviour and advanced processing.
  • Leadership experience in securing grants and fostering collaborative research environments.

Teaching and Educational Excellence
