Job Title & Role Purpose

The School of Computer Science and Mathematics within the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science invites applications for:

  • Senior Lecturer (research-focused)
  • Senior Teaching Fellow (primarily teaching-focused)

This appointment will strengthen software engineering education, ensuring our curriculum remains cutting-edge and aligned with industry needs. The role requires:

  • Undergraduate/postgraduate teaching delivery.
  • Curriculum development tailored to modern software engineering demands.
  • Broad contributions to the academic and pedagogic work of the School.
  • Potential involvement in outreach initiatives, interdisciplinary projects, and engagement activities.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A background in software development/computer science.
  • A PhD in a relevant field OR significant industry experience.
  • Expertise in areas such as:
    • Cloud computing
    • Data science
    • Software design/development
    • Artificial intelligence (agentic development)
    • Secure software development
    • Mobile/web development
    • Embedded systems
    • Software testing/Databases

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Academic Leadership

  • Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in software engineering.
  • Develop, update, and refine the curriculum to reflect current industry trends and employer demands.
  • Support student learning, including assessment design, feedback, and academic mentorship.

Research & Professional Engagement

  • Conduct research or scholarly activities relevant to software engineering, computing, or computer science.
  • Publish or disseminate findings (where applicable) through conferences, journals, or industry collaborations.
  • Engage with industry partners, potentially through guest lectures, consultancy, or project work.

Curriculum Innovation

  • Design and implement outreach programmes to inspire future generations (e.g., schools, public workshops).
  • Collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, leveraging the School’s strengths in computer science and related fields.
  • Contribute to departmental or faculty initiatives aligned with university priorities.

** Leadership & Development**

  • Act as a mentor to postgraduate students or junior staff.
  • Contribute to academic governance, committee work, or decision-making processes within the School. -Support professional development of colleagues through workshops, training, or Curry-rich initiatives.

Requirements & Qualifications

Essential Criteria

✔ A PhD in computer science, software engineering, or a related field OR An equivalent Industry qualification (e.g., Master’s degree + significant experience) or Chartered Engineer status.

✔ A minimum of [X/5/10 years] (if applicable) of post-qualification experience in:

  • Academia (teaching, research, or academic leadership)
  • Industry (software development, project management, or technical leadership)

✔ Demonstrated teaching experience at university/college level, including course/material design. ✔ Strong oral/written communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences (students, staff, industry). ✔ Commitment to supporting diversity, equality, and inclusion in teaching and research.

Desirable Skills

🔹 Experience with modular programming, object-oriented design, or Agile methodologies. 🔹 Familiarity with emerging technologies like:

  • AI/ML tools, modern cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Cybersecurity best practices.
  • DevOps pipelines. 🔹 Prior participation in pedagogic initiatives (such as flipped classrooms, pedagogic research). 🔹 Knowledge of Quality Assurance (QA) frameworks such as peer observation or BasqET.

Technical Competencies

Candidates should evidence proficiency in:

  • Core programming languages (Python, Java, JavaScript/C#, C++, etc.).
  • Software engineering tools (e.g., Git, Docker, Jenkins).
  • Database systems (Structured Query Language (SQL), NoSQL, or analytics-dedicated databases).
  • Testing methodologies (unit, integration, and end-to-end testing).
