Senior Lecturer

The School of Materials Science and Engineering is one of the top-ranked Materials programs in the Asia-Pacific region, renowned for its strength in every facet of materials science and engineering. It offers:
- Undergraduate programs in Materials Science and Engineering (Honours)
- Combined degree programs with Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Commerce
The Senior Lecturer (Level C) will:
- Conduct high-quality research
- Contribute significantly to educational excellence in the School and Faculty
Job Details
- Location: Sydney, NSW
- Work Type: Full-time
- Salary Range: $155K – $178K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
- Term: Fixed-term (18 months)
- Hours: 35 hours per week
About the Role
The Senior Lecturer will apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and critically reflective teaching practices to inspire student learning. They will be responsible for:
Teaching Responsibilities
- Conduct classes, assess student learning, and support postgraduate and undergraduate courses aligned with UNSW policies.
- Design and develop learning activities and resources, while providing assessment and feedback at course and program levels.
- Support student progression—one-to-one consultation and cohort advice to enhance learning and employability.
- Act as Course Authority, managing academic quality assurance.
- Maintain and develop industry-discipline links (e.g., professional development engagement).

Administrative & Leadership Responsibilities
- Collaborate on internal education funding opportunities.
- Contribute actively to School/Faculty meetings, seminars, and committees.
- Mentor and guide students, supervise HDR candidates, and serve on HDR review panels.
- Align with UNSW’s Code of Conduct, values, and health & safety policies.
Research Responsibilities
- Make independent, impactful research contributions in the field of expertise.
- Develop research groups aligned with disciplinary standards.
- Seek peer recognition and build national research networks.
- Attract research grants (fellowships, competitive grants) and secure research income from industry/end-users.
- align with normal research practices in the discipline.
About the Successful Applicant
To be successful, the Senior Lecturer should demonstrate:
Qualifications & Experience
- PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering or Materials Engineering, or relevant experience.
- Proven expertise in teaching and learning design, pedagogical approaches, and course/program development (undergraduate & postgraduate).
- Strong experience in:
- Mechanical behaviour of materials
- Materials failure
- Structural design
- Materials processing
- Experience with educational technologies and online delivery.
- Track record of teaching excellence, including curriculum development & improvement.
Research Background
- Established research profile in polymer science and engineering, with a focus on:
- Mechanical behaviour
- Advanced processing techniques
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and supervise high-calibre students.
- Capacity for collaboration, leadership, and peer leadership in research.
- Success in obtaining research funding and attracting industry/academic lobbying.
