Senior Lecturer
Senior Lecturer – Materials Science & Engineering
Location: Sydney, NSW Work Type: Full-Time Employment Type: Fixed Term (18 months) Salary: $155K – $178K + 17% superannuation & annual leave loading

This fixed-term Senior Lecturer (Level C) position is located at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, an internationally recognised unit specialising in:
- Materials Science & Engineering (Honours)
- Combined degrees with Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Commerce
Key Purpose
The role entails leading high-quality research while delivering educational excellence. You will:
- Shape teaching practices aligned with UNSW’s reflection and innovation frameworks
- Develop research that advances knowledge in your field of expertise
Responsibilities
Teaching & Class Excellence
- Apply a nuanced teaching philosophy to inspire student outcomes
- Deliver and assess undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including:
- Mechanical behaviour of materials
- Materials failure
- Structural design
- Materials processing
- Design evidence-based educational resources and assessments
- Support student learning individually (e.g., consultations) and as a cohort
- Manage course administration, ensuring academic quality and compliance
- Integrate industry partnerships for professional development

Research Leadership
- Conduct world-class research with industry impact, building a nationally recognised track record
- Focus areas include:
- Polymer science & engineering
- Mechanical behaviour & advanced processing
- Attract research funding and collaborations (grants, industry alliances)
- Mentor and supervise students (HDRs) and participate in review panels
- Expand an interdisciplinary research network and group
Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead School meetings, contribute to committees, and align with organisational values
- Work with diverse student backgrounds, maximising equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives
- Support health & safety policies while fostering a collaborative workplace culture
Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- PhD in polymer science & engineering, materials science/engineering, or related field
- At least 5 years post-PhD relevant academic/work experience, demonstrating disciplinary authority
Teaching Expertise
- Proven success in teaching mechanical behaviour, materials failure, structural design & processing
- Experience using educational technologies and adaptive learning environments
- Demonstrated curriculum innovation, teaching effectiveness, and leadership in student development
Industry & Professional Engagement
- Track record of knowledge exchange (e.g., industry working groups, commercial partnerships)
- Ability to attract EDI-aligned teaching opportunities and manageLearning & Teaching awards
Research Leadership
- Strong AHRC (Academic Research & Corporate-Government Grants) portfolio
- Record of high-impact research, including:
- Peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals in polymer science and related fields
- Credibility in advanced materials processing
- Leadership role(s) in directing or participating in research teams, including:
- Supervising high-calibre students
- Securing nationally competitive research funding

Selection Criteria
Applicants must address the following criteria in their application:
- Education: Validate qualifications and relevant discipline alignment
- Research Achievement: Highlight independent contributions to materials science/engineering
- Teaching Excellence: Demonstrate evidence-based pedagogical success
- Curriculum Development: Experience in improving or reEngineering standards
- Industry Proximity: Evidence of applicable work-integrated learning or partnership initiatives
