Senior Legal Counsel
Senior Legal Counsel (Employment)

Job Overview
Location: Hybrid (must be able to travel when required)
This is a senior in-house employment law role, responsible for delivering strategic, commercial, and pragmatic legal advice across a large, fast-moving organisation. You will partner closely with HR, senior leadership, and other legal colleagues to:
- Manage legal risk
- Support business change
- Shape legally compliant, people-focused solutions
We are looking for a talented, versatile "all-rounder"—equally at home managing an employment tribunal caseload as negotiating a TUPE schedule.
Main Duties

Advise HR and business leaders on legally complex, sensitive, and high-risk employee relations matters, including:
- Disciplinary and grievance issues
- Discrimination cases
- Whistleblowing
- Restructures, redundancies, and TUPE transfers
- Business change initiatives
- Restrictive covenants and senior exits
- Settlement agreements

Balance legal risk, commercial considerations, and operational needs

Manage or oversee employment litigation and pre-claim disputes, including:
- Instructing and supervising external counsel
- Reviewing pleadings
- Shaping case strategy
- Supporting witness preparation

Lead or support major employment law projects, such as:
- Harmonisation exercises
- Policy changes
- Collective consultation
- Reorganisations and acquisitions
- Outsourcing and insourcing activity

Provide transactional support for TUPE transfers, bids, proposals, and contract negotiations

Draft, review, and update employment-related documentation, including:
- Contracts and policies
- Templates, guidance notes, and training materials

Monitor legislative and case law developments, assess business impact, and drive implementation of necessary changes

Deliver clear, practical training and knowledge-sharing to HR, managers, and stakeholders on compliance best practices

Contribute to legal risk management and governance reporting, including:
- Identifying trends
- Advising on mitigation strategies
- Presenting insights to senior leadership forums

Build strong internal relationships to act as a trusted advisor on employment law, impacting both strategic initiatives and day-to-day operations

Support team development by:
- Mentoring junior colleagues
- Sharing knowledge
- Improving processes, precedents, and ways of working

What We Are Looking For
Essential
✅ Professional qualification as either:
- A Solicitor
- A Barrister
- A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx)
✅ Proven experience in advising on complex employment law matters (both contentious and non-contentious)
✅ Established track record in managing a litigation caseload
✅ Ability to influence senior stakeholders while delivering commercially focused, pragmatic advice
✅ Exceptional communication skills—clear, concise, and impactful
✅ Self-motivated individual with strong:
- Independent working capabilities
- Multitasking under pressure
- Problem-solving initiative
✅ Excellent presentation skills (both internal and client-facing)
✅ Collaborative mindset, with a commitment to:
- Team development
- Knowledge sharing
- Continuous improvement
Desirable
✧ Experience within an aggressive, fast-paced in-house legal function
✧ }Ability to instruct/manage external legal service providers effectively
