Role: Senior Legal Counsel

Location: West Sussex (Hybrid, 3 days on-site / 2 days from home)

Contract: Fixed Term Contract

Salary: £85,000 - £95,000 per annum pro-rata

The Role

We are partnering with a respected engineering and professional services organisation to recruit a Senior Legal Counsel on a 9-month fixed-term contract. This is a key position within a fast-paced engineering environment, providing legal support across a broad range of commercial matters, including contract negotiations, tender submissions, and risk management.

The successful candidate will be comfortable operating independently from day one, taking responsibility for ongoing matters and delivering clear, commercially minded legal advice to senior business leaders.

About You

  • Qualified solicitor in England & Wales with a minimum of 5 years PQE
  • Strong commercial law experience, including drafting and negotiating complex contracts.
  • Experience advising UK organisations in-house.
  • Experience in an engineering, consultancy or advisory business.
  • Knowledge of UK and/or US defence projects, including export controls.
  • Experience managing external legal advisers and budgets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including: Customer contracts, Supplier agreements, Consultancy contracts, Framework agreements, Service Level Agreements (SLAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs)
  • Provide legal support on bids, tenders, commercial negotiations, and contentious matters where required
  • Deliver practical, risk-based legal advice that supports business objectives
  • Ensure adherence to internal governance and contract approval procedures
  • Assist with corporate governance activities for UK entities, including board-related matters, statutory requirements, and regulatory filings
  • Advise on wider compliance and regulatory issues impacting the business, particularly within industries connected to defence, security, and export control regulations
  • Oversee the management of disputes and claims, engaging external legal advisers when necessary
  • Partner closely with the General Counsel to support the legal function through an evolving business landscape
