The Library Service is seeking to appoint two sustainability champions to lead the development of our Libraries as Green Library Hubs. These exciting part-time posts are funded for two years and will play a key role in embedding sustainability across the service and supporting communities to engage with climate action and environmental awareness.
The successful candidates will lead the development and delivery of a range of sustainability projects across all our branch and mobile libraries. They will develop training and learning opportunities for library staff and volunteers, identify new funding and partnership opportunities, and work collaboratively with internal and external partners to maximise impact.
A particular focus will be placed on ensuring that sustainability initiatives reach rural and island communities through our mobile library and outreach services, while recognising and promoting the unique cultural and linguistic heritage of the Outer Hebrides, including opportunities to support and develop Gaelic-language resources, activities and engagement.
We are looking for two enthusiastic and experienced people with knowledge or experience of sustainability, climate action or environmental projects. The posts will work across the entire library service and could be based in any of our four main branch libraries.
The successful candidates will be proactive, innovative and community-focused, with the ability to build effective partnerships, engage a wide range of stakeholders, and inspire others to contribute towards a more sustainable future for our islands.
You must be educated to Highers level or equivalent level of experience, have experience of working with a range of IT programmes and software with experience of working in environmental, climate or sustainability fields. A basic understanding of the role of a library and information service and how it operates is required. A comprehensive understanding of sustainability, climate and environmental issues is essential.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
