Senior Management Accountant – Divisional Finance Team

Main Duties of the Job
This role supports the Divisional Finance team in delivering effective financial management by leading on budgeting, reporting, and forecasting, providing expert advice to budget holders and key stakeholders. It also involves contributing to cost improvement processes while ensuring adherence to financial controls within the division.
Key responsibilities include ensuring accurate financial information, planning, reporting, and monitoring—helping to enable data-driven decision-making and drive divisional performance objectives.
You will report to the Finance Manager and collaborate closely with Divisional Finance Teams, alongside a wide range of clinical and non-clinical stakeholders, including budget holders, divisional management teams, other Senior Management Accountants, and the R&D department.

Detailed Job Description & Responsibilities
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the production of monthly finance reports and budget statements during the month-end process.
- Analyze and interpret financial variances (both month-on-month movements and actual performance vs. plan), collaborating to explain and address deviations with the team.
- Regularly meet with budget holders to review spending trends (both funding and full-time equivalent (FTE)), ensuring they understand their financial position fully.
- Serve as the primary finance contact for queries, building strong working relationships to enhance financial oversight.
Leadership & Team Management
- Oversee supervision of the Management Accountant within the Divisional Finance Team.
- Allocate work, participate in recruitment decisions, support career development, and conduct appraisal discussions.

Person Specification
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrated knowledge in various accounting areas, recognised through professional qualifications (e.g., AAT Certificate Level (or working toward CCAB)) or a finance degree with equivalent experience.
- Thorough understanding of financial systems, general ledger transactions, and reporting.
- Prior experience supervising a team.
- Expertise in budgetary control processes and finance systems to extract information supporting budget holders.
- Confident with IT tools, particularly spreadsheet modelling packages (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in NHS finance environments.
- Familiarity with the Oracle IT system.
- Experience in line management.
- Ability to thrive in a remote/flexible working setup.
Key Skills
- Quick learner who can assimilate new information efficiently.
- Budget management and financial forecasting skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency (particularly Excel).
- Data analysis and financial reporting expertise.
