Senior Management Accountant
Chief Accountant (Management Accounting) – Blackburne Foods (Hybrid)
Location: Blackburne Foods, Lancashire, UK Working Arrangement: Hybrid (office-based, primarily Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) Salary: £60,000 p.a. Employer: Blackburne Foods (BBF)
About the Role
Seeking an experienced Financial Accountant with a strong manufacturing background (preferably food/FMCG) to lead financial reporting, costing, and business partnering for our operational teams. You’ll support month-end close, budgeting, strategic planning, and process improvements—autonomy and creativity are encouraged!

Key Responsibilities
📊 Financial Reporting & Control
- Deliver timely, detailed monthly management accounts (full P&L & balance sheet analysis)
- Lead rigorous month-end close, including accruals, prepayments, and variance analysis
- Ensure strict compliance with financial controls, internal policies and audit processes
- Support statutory reporting, taxeffi ciency, and regulatory filings
🤝 Business Partnering
- Act as a finance business partner, advising operational and site teams on cost-efficiency and growth opportunities
- Challenge assumptions with data-driven insights to support strategic decision-making
- Collaborate closely with production teams to review efficiency, waste reduction, and yield performance
- Partner on capex spend analysis and operational profitability discussions
- Translate finance trends into actionable business strategies—bridging the gap with non-finance stakeholders
✏️ Costing & Manufacturing Finance
- Maintain and enhance our standard costing models, ensuring alignment with real-world performance
- Conduct in-depth production variance analysis (labor, materials, overheads) and propose improvement measures
- Monitor inventory profitability, valuation, and stock controls—or reporting anomalies
- Align with cost reduction and continuous improvement initiatives across all production functions

📈 Budgeting & Forecasting
- Own and drive the annual budgeting cycles, ensuring value accuracy and achievable targets
- Facilitate dynamic bi-annual forecasting to adapt to market fluctuations and production changes
- Track variance between actuals vs. budget, providing clear rationale for variances
- Work with department heads to signpost opportunities for improvement based on financial analysis
🔄 Process Improvement
- Identify inefficiencies in existing financial processes and systems, with a focus on automation & efficiency gains
- Leverage data analysis to uncover trends and opportunities for standardisation
- Support corporate finance transformations, including ERP system enhancements and reporting upgrades -Champion a culture of “always better”—continuously improve processes and learning
Skills & Experience
🔹 Essential
- Fully-qualified accountant (with one of: ACCA, CIMA, ACA, or other chartered association)
- Five+ years’ experience in manufacturing accountancy, ideally in food or FMCG sectors
- Deep understanding of standard costing models, spoiled batch reconciliation, and production yield analysis
- Advanced Excel (dynamic arrays, pivot tables, scenarios, automation scripts) plus strong experience with ERP systems
- Proven ability to influence up/down hierarchy—bridging emotive conversations with commercial impact
- Spotlight’s essential: meticulous attention to detail with a strong narrative mind to explain variances effectively
- Highly organised; prioritisation skills for urgent deadlines
⚡ Desirable
- Past experience in a multi-site manufacturing environment, fast-paced or high-volume production settings
- Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma or cost-reduction programs applied to production lines
