The Role

The HSBC Innovation Banking UK (HINV UK), Financial Crime Risk & Controls (FCRC) team is a First Line of Defense (FLOD) team responsible for identifying, investigating and monitoring relationships that pose a money laundering or terrorist financing risk in support of all legal and regulatory requirements relating to anti-money laundering (AML) and counter terrorism financing.

FCRC also has responsibility for reviewing and assessing Sanctions, Anti-Bribery & Corruption (AB&C), Tax Transparency, Fraud and Reputational Risk considerations for both existing clients and new prospects.

This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing effective anti-money laundering (AML) and financial crime controls within the First Line of Defense (1LoD). To ensure business activities are conducted in line with regulatory expectations and internal risk appetite, embedding a proactive risk and control culture across client onboarding, transaction monitoring, and ongoing client management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Financial Crime Risk Management Framework across AML, Sanctions, AB&C, Tax Transparency and Fraud, including RCAs and overall control environment effectiveness
  • Serve as the primary AML subject matter expert, providing timely guidance and maintaining awareness of emerging typologies, trends and enforcement actions
  • Support the business to identify, assess and mitigate AML/CTF risks across products, clients and geographies
  • Provide financial crime risk input to new product approvals, strategic initiatives, and client onboarding, retention and exit decisions
  • Design and maintain end-to-end AML control frameworks across the customer lifecycle; monitor effectiveness via KPIs, KRIs and MI, and lead escalation and remediation of material issues
  • Line manage Managers and Senior Associates covering Sanctions, AB&C, Tax Transparency and Fraud risk, and oversee Financial Crime Operations; coach teams on risk ownership and accountability.
  • Lead the delivery of the Enterprise-wide Risk Assessment (EWRA), ensuring comprehensive identification and assessment of inherent and residual risks across products, clients, channels, and geographies; embedding results into strategic decision making
  • Working closely with the Financial Crime Business Risk Manager responsible for the co-ordination and update of RCAs across AML, Sanctions, AB&C, Tax Transparency and Fraud
  • Working closely with HINV UK Financial Crime (2LOD) to seek advice on complex global financial crime matters and policy interpretation, serving as a FLOD escalation point of contact for financial crimes activity for HINV UK and provision of advice and guidance to FCRC
  • Partnering closely with FLOD business and product areas, the HINV UK Client Lifecycle Management team, and HBUK and global Business Financial Crime Risk teams
  • Supporting the wider team who undertake Special Category of Client (SCC) Assessments (including Enhanced Due Diligence and Account Activity Reviews) and Reputational Risk assessments
  • Exercise delegated FLOD decision-making authority from the HINV MLRO in line with documented Financial Crime Delegated Authorities
  • Support responses to regulatory requests, audits and reviews, translating regulatory change into practical control enhancements
  • Deputise for the Head of FCRC as required, including at RRCSC and the Financial Crime Forum, reporting on and developing KPIs/KRIs, risks, issues, trends and mitigating actions
  • Produce high-quality MI and senior management reporting, providing clear insights, trends and recommendations to support governance
  • Promote a strong risk and compliance culture in the First Line, delivering targeted AML training and awareness aligned to business activities and heightened risks

Requirements and Skills

  • Extensive experience in senior Financial Crime risk management roles within the financial services industry including development and monitoring of compliance management processes
  • Extensive experience in AML and Financial Crime within banking, fintech, or financial services. Deep understanding of AML frameworks; CDD, EDD, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening
  • Demonstrated ability to operate across diverse business units, innovative product sets and a broad array of customer segments
  • Proven senior stakeholder management and committee representation as a Financial Crime Subject Matter Expert
  • Experience leading and managing teams performing financial crime risk management
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of financial crimes risks and the prevention and mitigation processes and controls
  • Advanced knowledge of control frameworks and the ability to design and assess compliance programs and evaluate effectiveness of controls embedded within business processes
  • Strong understanding of the compliance and regulatory frameworks that apply to financial institutions regulated by the FCA and PRA in the UK
  • ICA or ACAMS qualifications desirable
