Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Hampshire Coast (On-site)

Salary: Competitive + Comprehensive Benefits

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading engineering and technology organisation working at the forefront of defence, marine, and advanced technology programmes.

This role offers the chance to work on complex, high-integrity engineering projects, developing innovative mechanical design solutions while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and industry-leading experts.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of challenging technical work packages, leading the development and delivery of mechanical design solutions from concept through to manufacture. You will play a key role in driving technical excellence, mentoring engineers, and ensuring designs meet demanding customer and operational requirements.

Working within a highly specialised environment, you will lead design reviews, support safety and governance activities, and contribute to the successful delivery of cutting-edge engineering programmes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of mechanical design solutions for complex engineering projects.
  • Coordinate and guide multidisciplinary technical teams through design reviews and technical assessments.
  • Chair internal design reviews and support customer-facing review activities.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout project delivery.
  • Produce high-quality technical reports, documentation, and engineering outputs.
  • Provide technical guidance to customers, stakeholders, and junior engineers.
  • Apply safety engineering principles throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Contribute to hazard identification activities, safety assessments, and design safety cases.
  • Support innovative problem-solving and the implementation of engineering best practice.

About You

You will be an experienced mechanical design professional capable of working independently while providing technical leadership and mentoring to less experienced engineers.

Essential Experience

  • Strong mechanical design engineering background within a complex engineering environment.
  • Significant experience producing technical drawings from 3D CAD models using Siemens NX.
  • Experience collaborating with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and subject matter experts.
  • Knowledge and practical application of:
    • Hazard Identification (HAZID)
    • Safety Cases and Safety Management Systems
    • Analytical, simulation, and modelling techniques
    • Materials selection, coatings, and corrosion management
    • Concept design and product development
  • Substantial experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Configuration control using PLM systems such as Teamcenter
    • Composite design and manufacture
    • Design for Manufacture (DFM)
    • Design for Assembly (DFA)
    • Systems integration, cable routing, interface management, and staged release to manufacture

Qualifications

  • HNC, HND, Degree, or equivalent experience in:
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Aeronautical Engineering
    • Product Design
    • Industrial Design
  • Membership of a recognised professional engineering institution.
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or actively working towards accreditation.

Working Arrangement

  • Full-time position (37 hours per week).
  • Predominantly site-based role with limited remote working opportunities.
  • Flexible working options available, including flexible start/finish times and compressed hours.
