What you would do as our Mechanical Design Engineer
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of our next-generation products, while also supporting continuous improvement across the current portfolio. You will transform concepts into robust production-ready designs, applying innovative techniques and collaborating with colleagues across our global network. This role falls under the R&D flexible-working scheme, allowing you to choose when to work from home or the office, although hands-on tasks such as prototyping and testing will require regular presence in Olney.
You would also be responsible for:
- Delivering engineering design solutions for new and existing products, developing concepts through to production release in collaboration with suppliers and using a variety of manufacturing methods including sheet metalwork, injection moulding, aluminium extrusion, and die-casting.
- Creating CAD models, engineering drawings, and BOMs using Autodesk Inventor, while managing CAD data and documentation through Autodesk Vault Professional.
- Collaborating closely with the Hardware Development Team to solve technical challenges, ensuring designs balance cost, performance, manufacturability, and compliance with relevant standards and safety requirements.
- Managing your workload to meet project timelines, driving VAVE initiatives and continuous improvement across the product portfolio, and adopting a hands-on approach to prototyping, testing, and evaluating new ideas.
- Contributing to a structured and high-quality development process by presenting technical reports and documentation, supporting cross-functional teams, and engaging in design governance activities such as reviews and compliance checks.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
