Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Cambridgeshire
Salary: £60,000 + Excellent Benefits
Job Type: Permanent | Full-Time | Office Based
The Opportunity
An innovative engineering company is looking to appoint a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its expanding product development team. This is an excellent opportunity to take ownership of the design and development of advanced mechanical equipment, working on projects from initial concept through to manufacture, testing, installation, and ongoing product improvement.
This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys tackling complex engineering challenges, leading projects, and developing high-quality mechanical solutions within a collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design
- Design and develop complex mechanical systems, components, and assemblies.
- Lead projects throughout the complete product development lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to production and product support.
- Produce accurate 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
- Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, and design verification.
- Select suitable materials and manufacturing methods to optimise quality, performance, and cost.
- Develop and evaluate prototypes, implementing design improvements where necessary.
Project Management
- Take responsibility for delivering engineering work packages on time and within project objectives.
- Plan workloads and provide regular progress updates to internal stakeholders.
- Participate in structured engineering reviews and development processes.
- Identify technical risks and implement practical engineering solutions.
- Present design concepts and project updates to senior management.
Testing & Validation
- Develop validation plans to ensure products meet design specifications.
- Support testing, commissioning, and production introduction activities.
- Analyse test results and implement corrective design modifications.
- Ensure products are fully validated before release into manufacture.

Technical Support & Continuous Improvement
- Investigate engineering issues using structured root cause analysis.
- Support manufacturing and service departments with technical expertise.
- Drive continuous product improvements and engineering best practice.
- Assist with resolving customer and production-related technical challenges.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with electrical, software, manufacturing, procurement, and production teams.
- Liaise with suppliers to ensure components meet technical and quality requirements.
- Build strong relationships across multiple departments to ensure successful project delivery.
Leadership
- Mentor and support junior engineers within the team.
- Promote engineering excellence and encourage knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to improving engineering standards and development processes.
About You
Essential
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience designing mechanical products within a manufacturing or industrial engineering environment.
- Strong 3D CAD skills using SolidWorks or a similar package.
- Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes, material selection, and Design for Manufacture (DFM).
- Proven experience delivering engineering projects from concept through production.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
- Self-motivated, organised, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
Desirable
- Experience designing industrial machinery, automation equipment, or electromechanical products.
- Knowledge of structured product development methodologies.
- Experience working within precision engineering or regulated manufacturing environments.
