Job Description:

Your new role

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering team as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Rail) based in Newton Aycliffe.

In this role, you will take ownership of the technical design and integration of train driver cabs, helping to deliver innovative rolling stock solutions that are used by rail operators across the world. Working within a collaborative, international engineering environment, you'll combine mechanical design expertise with systems integration, ergonomics, and technical problem-solving to create safe, efficient, and user-focused cab solutions.

Whether you're currently working in rail, automotive, aerospace, or another complex engineering sector, this is a fantastic opportunity to apply your mechanical engineering knowledge to large-scale, industry-leading projects.

Some key responsibilities

  • Lead and support the technical design and development of driver cab systems throughout bid and project phases.
  • Define and develop equipment integration concepts within the driver's cab environment.
  • Carry out ergonomic assessments to optimise the driver's workspace.
  • Develop system requirements specifications and technical documentation.
  • Review and assess supplier proposals, designs, and engineering solutions.
  • Verify mechanical, electrical, and installation drawings and associated documentation.
  • Review FEM analysis reports and support design validation activities.
  • Conduct tolerance analysis and equipment integration assessments.
  • Support system testing, validation activities, and type testing.
  • Participate in design reviews with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions on time and to specification.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
