Job Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer

About the Role

Ultra Precision Control Systems (PCS) is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering Function.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ownership of Technical Leadership:

    • Develop technical documents and product data without direct supervision, aligning closely with project design intent.
    • Apply and scrutinise project requirements independently.
    • Ledging design solutions to meet schedules and budgets.
  • Technical & Stakeholder Interfaces:

    • Interface with supply chain and operations to ensure design intent is met, embedding design for manufacture (DFM)/design for test (DFT) practices.
    • Review and prepare engineering estimates and company bids, identifying risks and dependencies across departments.
  • Communication & Collaboration:

    • Present ideas and proposals internally (peers & managers) and externally (design reviews, with assistance).
    • Liaise with commercial, finance, and supply chain colleagues.
    • Ensure documentation and drawings adhere to configuration management and security standards.

  • Safety & Risk Awareness:

    • Full understanding of export licence requirements, compliance with ITAR and national security protocols.
    • Support failure investigations, recommend solutions, and present findings to management and customers.
  • Technical Problem-Solving & Mentorship:

    • Lead small work packages, guiding junior engineers to meet schedule, budgets, and quality targets.
    • Assist in resolving technical challenges across domains.
  • Design & CAD Proficiency:

    • Author complex assemblies, 3D models, and technical drawings using company CAD tools.
    • Apply linear and geometric tolerances per British & International Standards, updating company draughting manuals.
    • Design ~electromechanical interfaces, including PCB enclosures with EMI/EMC considerations.
    • Contribute to electrical wiring harness assemblies and PCB layouts with input into electronics design and systems.
  • Analysis & Strategy:

    • Perform FEA (Finite Element Analysis).
    • Design for manufacture and production, understanding project lifecycles and engineering processes.
    • Assess and manage technical risk within their domain, providng honest, impact assessments.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Qualifications:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent industry experience after qualification).
    • Preference for Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent from a UK-recognised institute).
  • Technical competencies:

    • Mechanical aspects of PCB enclosure design, with a focus on EMI/EMC compliance.
    • Experience with aerospace materials and manufacturing processes.
    • Knowledge of airworthiness and safety certification standards, including DO-160 and environmental requirements.

  • Advanced CAD & software:

    • Proficiency in selected CAD tools for automated model authoring and drawing creation.
    • Familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems.
  • Soft skills:

    • Strong technical communication abilities with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ability to manage work independently and make timely, informed decisions.
    • Financial awareness and Microsoft Office proficiency with role-specific software.
