Position: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Location: Sheffield
Hybrid: No, the position is office-based
Visa support: No. You MUST have the right to work in the UK
Sector: Materials handling
Salary: £50,000 - £70,000 according to experience
Software: Autodesk Inventor - we are happy to consider other CAD packages if you are happy to cross-train
This is a true engineering role; we are looking to speak with people who have strong engineering capabilities and experience of as many of the following as possible:
- Heavy Equipment & Bulk Material Handling Design - CAD literate, ideally with Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, SolidEdge or similar
- Structural Steel Design & Analysis - Designing support frames, platforms, walkways, and mezzanines, structural calculations (loads, deflection, stability, buckling)
- Conveyor, Chute & Materials Transfer System Design - Understanding wear, flow characteristics, spillage, and dust control
- Design for Fabrication, Assembly & Installation - Designing weldments, bolted structures, and modular assemblies considering lifting, transport, and site installation constraints whilst minimizing fabrication complexity and cost
- Access, Safety & Ergonomics Design - Designing safe access platforms, ladders, handrails, and guarding which comply with safety standards (e.g., Working at Height, machinery directives)
- Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance - Knowledge of machinery safety standards (e.g., guarding, emergency stops), awareness of environmental regulations (dust, noise, emissions)
- Load Case & Failure Analysis - Able to assess static and dynamic loads (impact, vibration, shock loading, wind, snow, seismic), able to applying FEA or hand calculations for critical components, designing against fatigue, failure, and overload conditions
- Problem Solving & Root Cause Analysis - Able to troubleshoot equipment failures and inefficiencies, able to apply structured methods (e.g., FMEA, 5 Whys, RCA)

About You:

- Degree Qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or very similar) as a minimum
- Post-graduate qualifications and professional accreditations are beneficial - MEng, CEng etc
- Proficient with principles of engineering calculations as above
- Experience of medium - heavy engineering preferred
- CAD Literate, ideally with Autodesk Inventor although other 3D CAD packages are also welcome
- Able to attend the Sheffield office on a daily basis
