Senior Mechanical Engineer
Senior Mechanical Engineer – Leeds Oncology (St James’ University Hospital) – Permanent, Full-Time
EQUANS are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our permanent full-time (40-hour weekly) contract at St James’ University Hospital’s Leeds Oncology Wing.

About the Role
Overview
- Work closely with the maintenance team to deliver high-standard customer-facing services for the Leeds Oncology Wing
- Perform a wide range of reactive and planned maintenance, ensuring rigorous execution
- Provide technical guidance, support, and training to colleagues
- Take on Authorised Person duties after completing relevant training
- Operate with high flexibility and multi-skilling to meet operational demands
- Report to the Maintenance Supervisor, delivering reports on work in progress and completed projects
Core Responsibilities
- Conduct maintenance, repairs, testing, and inspections of building, mechanical, and electrical services while adhering to relevant standards and procedures
- Cover essential duties when colleagues are absent to ensure service continuity
- Follow strict safety protocols—statutory, NHS, Trust, and company guidelines must be respected
- Current scope includes:
- Heating and domestic water systems
- General electrical work (lighting, power)
- Air handling units
- Low-voltage electrical distribution & switchgear
- Emergency standby generators
- Fire alarm and emergency lighting systems
- Electrical control systems
- Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Operational awareness and records of major plant systems
- Maintain comprehensive records and service reports, reporting progress to managers
- Occasionally install minor upgrades and assist skilled trades
- Upskill through ongoing training, ensuring competence as Competent or Authorised Person as required
- Support cross-site healthcare projects as needed
- Complete overtime as scheduled to meet demands
- Undertake additional duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience
- Qualified engineer with a minimum 3 years of post-apprenticeship experience in mechanical or cross-trade engineering
- Healthcare experience is desirable (but not mandatory)
- Cross-trade experience will be advantageous
