About the Role
We’re looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer with strong experience in the design and development of complex mechanical products.
You’ll combine excellent hands-on design skills with sound engineering judgment, taking ownership of significant work packages from concept through verification and transfer to manufacture.
You would be joining our Mechanical Engineering Team within the System Development department, based in Cambridge.
System Development Overview
The System Development department designs, develops, and maintains the electromechanical robotic system, including:
- Surgeon Console
- Bedside Units
- Accessories, such as the endoscopic camera
Together with our surgical instruments and consumables, these make up the Versius surgical robotic system.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to:

This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of three days per week based in the office.
Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design and development of product enhancements and new products, in accordance with formal design control procedures while supporting successful introduction into manufacture.
- Take ownership of significant mechanical design work packages, spanning:
- Concept generation
- Detailed design
- Prototyping
- Verification
- Release to manufacture
- Design mechanical parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, applying solid and surface modelling techniques as appropriate.
- Develop practical, manufacturable solutions for production methods including:
- Machining
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Injection moulding
- Build and test prototype products and test fixtures, interpreting results and refining designs where required.
- Create, update, and review mechanical drawings and product configuration documentation to a high standard.
- Author and review technical reports to support:
- Product development
- Verification activities
- Design review processes
- Investigate product issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective corrective actions to support continuous improvement.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including those in systems, software, electronics, manufacturing, and quality, to deliver robust solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to more junior engineers and peers.
- Contribute to developing and improving the department's tools, processes, standards, and engineering methods.
- Embrace the fast-paced nature of the company, with flexibility to engage in versatile tasks that help the Technology function achieve its objectives.
About You
Essential Requirements
- A relevant academic background in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Proven experience in the design and development of mechanical products that have been successfully introduced to manufacture.
- Strong SolidWorks design skills including:
- Surface modelling techniques
- Solid modelling techniques
- Experience designing parts and assemblies and creating drawings for:
- Machining
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Injection moulding
- Strong analytical skills including:
- Ability to perform mechanical engineering design calculations
- Development of robust designs from first principles
- Experience planning and delivering complex technical projects with a high degree of ownership and accountability.
- Ability to make sound engineering decisions, balancing:
- Technical considerations
- Manufacturing requirements
- Quality standards
- Cost considerations
- Timescale management
- Experience authoring technical documentation, including:
- Test reports
- Design reviews

- Significant experience in interpretation and production of mechanical drawings.
- Ability to troubleshoot product issues and identify root causes.
Desired Experience
- Experience working in or understanding the requirements of a regulated development environment, ideally within:
- Medical devices under ISO 13488
- IEC 60601
- Practical experience supporting transfer-to-manufacture (TTM) activities for parts and products, especially for low-volume production.
- Understanding of, and experience with, engineering drawings to BS 8888.
- Additional knowledge of ISO 1101 (Geometric Product Specification - GD&T).
