About the Role
We’re looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer with strong experience in the design and development of complex mechanical products. You’ll combine excellent hands-on design skills with sound engineering judgement, taking ownership of significant work packages from concept through verification and transfer to manufacture.
You would be joining our Mechanical Engineering Team within the System Development department, based in Cambridge.
The System Development department designs, develops and maintains the electromechanical robotic system, including the Surgeon Console, Bedside Units, and accessories such as the endoscopic camera. Together with our surgical instruments and consumables, these make up the Versius surgical robotic system. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to play a key role in the development of complex medical devices, working in a truly multidisciplinary environment while helping us deliver on our mission to transform the future of surgery.

This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of three days per week based in the office.
Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design and development of product enhancements and new products in accordance with formal design control procedures, supporting successful introduction into manufacture.
- Take ownership of significant mechanical design work packages, from concept generation through detailed design, prototyping, verification and release.
- Design mechanical parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, applying solid and surface modelling techniques as appropriate.
- Develop practical, manufacturable solutions for a range of production methods including machining, sheet metal and injection moulding.
- Build and test prototype products and test fixtures, interpreting results and refining designs where required.
- Create, update and review mechanical drawings and product configuration documentation to a high standard.
- Write and review technical reports to support product development, verification and design review activities.
- Investigate product issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective corrective actions to support continuous improvement.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including systems, software, electronics, manufacturing and quality, to deliver robust product solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and peers.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of departmental tools, processes, standards and engineering methods.

About you
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be:

- A relevant academic background in Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline
- Proven experience in the design and development of mechanical products that have been successfully released into manufacture
- Strong SolidWorks design skills, including surface and solid modelling techniques
- Experience designing parts and creating drawings for a range of manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal, and injection moulding
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to perform mechanical engineering design calculations and develop robust designs from first principles
- Experience planning and delivering complex technical work with a high degree of ownership and accountability
- The ability to make sound engineering decisions, balancing technical, manufacturing, quality, cost and timescale considerations
- Experience authoring technical documentation, such as test reports and design reviews
- Significant experience creating, updating, reviewing and interpreting mechanical drawings
- The ability to troubleshoot product issues and identify root causes
It would also be beneficial if you have:
- Experience working in, and understanding the requirements of, a regulated development environment, ideally within medical devices under ISO 13485 and/or IEC 60601
- Practical experience supporting transfer-to-manufacture activities for parts and products for low volume production
- An understanding of, and practical experience producing, engineering drawings to BS 8888, ideally with additional knowledge of ISO 1101 Geometric Product Specification (GD&T)
