Senior Mechanical Engineer

Southampton area, SO40 4BL (Onsite; 4.5 days per week)
Up to £60k per annum + Benefits

The role has arisen due to strategic growth and continued investment in advanced manufacturing capabilities. As a key member of the engineering team, this position holds strategic importance, influencing product design, safety standards, and compliance across projects. It presents an exciting opportunity to work on challenging, high-impact solutions that support technological advancements and customer success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the mechanical design process for complex machinery, translating requirements into robust CAD models and detailed drawings using Solid Edge.
  • Design customised machinery components, including frames, enclosures, and structural elements, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Develop material handling systems, focusing on loading, unloading, fixturing, and operator interaction.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure seamless mechanical integration of RF generators and electrical components.
  • Manage third-party suppliers, contract manufacturers, and external vendors to achieve design specifications and quality standards.
  • Produce comprehensive technical documentation, including BOMs, design calculations, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure all designs adhere to machinery safety standards such as CE and UKCA marks and support compliance activities.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience designing industrial machinery or bespoke process equipment.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software, particularly Solid Edge, with solid understanding of 2D drafting.
  • Experience in designing dielectric (RF) heating and welding systems or similar thermal/high-voltage machinery.
  • Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Familiarity with systems involving hydraulics, pneumatics, and drive mechanisms including stepper and servo motors.
  • Experience working with external vendors, including contract manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Practical understanding of machinery safety standards and compliance requirements.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Leadership experience or acting as a design authority.
  • Exposure to machinery installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with international safety and compliance standards such as CE and UKCA.
  • Experience managing technical queries and quality issues during the project lifecycle.
