Senior Mechanical Engineer – UK Water/Wastewater

About the Role
The UK water sector is undergoing unprecedented transformation and investment. Egis is building a high-performing Mechanical Engineering team to lead this evolution, seeking applicants who want to drive meaningful change in national water and wastewater projects. Within a multidisciplinary, collaborative setting, you’ll shape technically robust, sustainable, and innovative treatment solutions for critical infrastructure.
This opportunity is ideal for joining at a pivotal growth stage, helping establish, develop, and scale Egis’ Mechanical Engineering capability—backed by years of global infrastructure know-how and long-term industry commitment.
Key Responsibilities
You will lead and deliver key tasks in your area of Mechanical Engineering Design, including:

Lead defined mechanical design work packages across:
- Feasibility studies
- Optioneering
- Concept, outline, and detailed design

Prepare, review, and coordinate mechanical deliverables:
- Calculations (hydraulics, structures, loads)
- Specifications, datasheets, and procurement documentation
- P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams)
- Layouts, detailed design reports

Take ownership of assigned mechanical packages, ensuring:
- Technical excellence
- Management of interfaces, scope, budget, programme, and change control

Conduct site surveys, data reviews, and technical discussions with:
- Clients, operators, suppliers, contractors, and technology providers

Develop mechanical solutions for critical water infrastructure:
- Pumps, pipework (HDPE/steel/ductile iron), valves
- Tanks, lifting systems, screening, grit removal
- Odour control, packaged treatment plants
- Associated wastewater/biosolids treatment systems

Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces, including:
- MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing) integration
- Civil/structural, architectural, and construction teams
- Accessibility, maintainability, and constructability considerations

Support safety and risk management, including:
- CDM (Construction Design & Management) 2015 compliance
- Safety-by-design, HAZOP/SWIFT input
- Technical risk assessments
- Commissioning strategies and performance testing

Evaluate supplier/contractor submissions, with involvement in:
- Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT)/Site Acceptance Tests (SAT)
- Technical interrogation, procurement negotiations, and post-handover support

Mentor Engineers and Graduates, and contribute to:
- Improvements in technical standards, templates, and workflows
Requirements
Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:
- BEng/MEng or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
-
Professional Status:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng status) *or direct CEng pathway progress (uploaded proof of progress)**.

Experience:
- 6+ years in mechanical engineering design, specialising in:
- UK Water/Wastewater, Biosolids/Bioresources, or Oil & Gas sectors.
- Proven ability to deliver Mechanical Engineering packages within multidisciplinary design environments.
- 6+ years in mechanical engineering design, specialising in:

Technical Proficiency:
- Practical experience with:
- Equipment selection, pumping systems, pipework
- Hydraulics, valve selection, layout planning
- Packaged plants and load-bearing/support structures.
- Ability to develop and verify:
- Develops, checks and reviews mechanical specifications
- Data sheets, schedules, reports, process flow diagrams, design documents
- Hazard assessments, technical risk management input
- Procurement documentation
- Practical experience with:

Compliance & Knowledge:
- UK Water industry standards
- CDM 2015 regulations and safety-by-design principles
- Knowledge of parcelled and tied-up projects

Commercial & Communication Skills:
- Evaluates scope, budget, and programme conformity
- Leads and documents technical discussions with clarity
Desirable Skills/Knowledge
- Industry-Focused Experience:
- AMP 8 schemes, WINEP (Water Industry National Efficiency Programme), SRO (Significant Project Framework), D&B (Design and Build) feasibility, or framework/ alliance engagement.
- Water reuse/trickling filters, sludge/bioresources treatment, pumping stations
- Renewable energy integration, odour control, chemical dosing systems
- Work on low-carbon conversion projects or prefabrication methods.

- Hydraulic modelling (software e.g., COMPASS, WIFADO, AutoPlant)
- Pump system analysis and sizing software (MEPMD, Hydring, WQWin)
- Digital tools/automation (Workfront, Power BI, Python, VBA, or advanced Excel)

- HAZOP/SWIFT reviews, FAT/SAT support, commissioning site visits
