Senior Medical Writer
Job Title: Senior Medical Writer
Reports to: Principal Medical Writer or Scientific Team Lead, Medical Strategy Solutions (MSS)
About the Role
As a Senior Medical Writer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the communication of complex scientific ideas. Taking leadership of large projects and specific workstreams across medical communications deliverables, you will ensure scientific integrity, quality, and adherence to client specifications for all outputs produced by the team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

High-Impact Content Development:
- Create scientifically accurate, clear, and well-referenced materials tailored to target audiences and client objectives.
- Collaborate with key experts, negotiate content, and suggest improvements to enhance deliverables.

Versatile Medical Communication Support:
- Develop a diverse range of materials, including:
- Meeting materials (e.g., slides, agendas, discussion guides).
- Post-meeting activities (e.g., webcasts, reports) and attendance at relevant gatherings (workshops, advisory boards).
- Newsletters, training materials, and publications.
- Maintain close relationships with clients and subject-matter experts.
- Develop a diverse range of materials, including:

Medical & Scientific Research & Advocacy:
- Conduct in-depth research on medical and scientific topics using credible sources.
- Stay abreast of therapy areas, including drug mechanisms, disease states, treatment guidelines, and competitive landscapes.

Strategic & Operational Contributions:
- Participate in strategic projects, offering counsel, insights, and solutions to client initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with internal guidelines, client SOPs, and industry standards for both personal and team-level accountability.

Account & Project Support:
- Liaise with clients and the accounts team, including:
- Attending internal kick-off meetings, status updates, and client-related calls.
- Anticipating project challenges (timeline, budget, quality) and mitigating risks.
- Identifying opportunities to expand client relationships and drive business growth.

Content Support for New Business:
- Write proposals and presentations to secure new opportunities.

Software & Database Navigation:
- Proficiency in technical tools (e.g., EndNote, DataVision, ZINC) as required for projects.

Leadership & Mentorship:
- Mentor junior colleagues, provide feedback to managers, and maintain timely timesheet submissions.
Line Management Responsibilities (if applicable)
- Lead career and development of assigned team members.
- Define performance objectives and development plans.
- Conduct performance reviews and address underperformance with supportive intervention plans.

Past Experience:
- Proven career as a Medical Writer in a medical communications (medcomms), healthcare agency, or pharma environment.

Education:
- Graduate degree in a life science field (ideally Biomedical Studies, Pharmacy, or Medicine); higher degree a plus.

Core Competencies:
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with creative and scientifically precise delivery per client briefs.
- Strong medical/healthcare system understanding and knowledge of the medical education/publication industry.
- Precision and attention to detail with adaptability in project adjustments.
- Willingness to upskill in novel scientific/therapeutic/regulatory knowledge.
- Multi-tasking ability to manage competing priorities while effectively managing time.

Soft Skills:
- Confident independence and collaborative teamwork.
- Negotiation and relationship-building skills to achieve objectives.
- Flexibility and resilience in fast-paced environments.

Technical Proficiency:
- Proficient in advanced Word, PowerPoint, and Excel using style guides (e.g., OPEN Health, client, or publisher standards).
- Familiarity with AM: Thorough Clinical Rater compliance* guidelines, ABPI Code of Practice, and AMA editorial style.
