Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Senior Metabolomics Bioinformatician to join the Metabolomics Data Analysis Team within Research Predictive Science in Product Safety. This role will enable you to:
- Support multiple research projects, balancing tight deadlines with stringent scientific standards.
- Perform metabolomics data processing and analysis across diverse applications, primarily focusing on chemical and biological solutions for agriculture.
- Design and execute novel analytical approaches, including:
- Advanced statistical modelling
- Machine learning and AI applications
- Novel data mining and visualisation techniques
- Integration of biological context into analyses
- Deliver high-quality, insightful data interpretation to address critical project challenges.
- Design, optimise, and maintain data handling and retrieval solutions.
- Contribute to digital infrastructure projects while acting as the metabolomics subject matter expert in multidisciplinary teams, including multi-omics integration.
- Represent Syngenta’s metabolomics platform externally and within scientific communities.

Qualifications & Requirements
Essential Requirements
- PhD or equivalent extensive experience in bioinformatics, metabolomics, chemistry, biology, data science, or a related field.
- In-depth metabolomics expertise, including:
- Processing targeted and untargeted high-resolution LC-MS metabolomics data using specialist software (both vendor and open-source).
- Understanding of mass spectrometry data architectures and the impact of sample preparation, QC procedures, and analytical chemistry on data processing requirements.
- Proficiency in peak picking, peak annotation, data normalisation, and filtering techniques.
- Pipeline development skills in KNIME, R, or Python.
- Advanced database and literature review capabilities.
- Multivariate statistical analysis experience, including:
- Selection of differentially abundant metabolites (DAMs)
- Pathway analysis
- Biochemical data interpretation
- Exceptional attention to detail, compliance with best practices, and adherence to quality assurance processes.
- Ability to communicate complex results clearly to non-specialist stakeholders.
- Strong adaptability, rapid skill acquisition, and a collaborative mindset.
Desirable Qualifications
- Toxicology metabolomics experience, familiarity with regulatory NAMs (New Approach Methodologies), or OECD guidance documents and reporting frameworks.
- Technical leadership in defined areas.
- Experience with multiple applications of metabolomics (e.g., in vitro, plant, environmental, mammalian, or human studies).
- Multi-omics data integration skills.
- Working knowledge of Thermo Orbitrap MS and software such as Xcalibur, Freestyle, Tracefinder, Compound Discoverer, LipidSearch.

About the Role
Work Location
Jealott’s Hill International Research Centre, United Kingdom, a semi-rural campus between Bracknell and Maidenhead home to 800 Syngenta scientists and support staff. Key activities include:
- Discovery of new active crop protection ingredients
- Development of new formulation technologies
- Product safety research
- Technical support for global product ranges.
