Senior Metals Trader, Aluminium

Department: Petrochemicals Location: London, UK - Charing Cross

About the Company

PetroChina Company Ltd is the publicly listed arm of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), one of the world’s largest global commodity trading companies. PetroChina International, the international trading subsidiary, was established in 2002 with operations in over 20 countries, including key trading hubs in Houston, London, and Singapore.

The company specialises in exploring international markets, developing trade models, and enhancing logistics through investments in refining, storage, and transportation. This positions PetroChina International as a central player in green energy transition metals, with a focus on establishing a dedicated Aluminium trading capability.

About the Role & Your Impact

We are seeking an ambitious, entrepreneurial, and commercially astute Senior Metals Trader to spearhead our new Aluminium trading desk within the Petrochemicals team at PetroChina International London (PCIL). While this is a fresh desk, you will operate within an established global trading framework with robust systems, risk controls, and operational support already in place.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Trade primary physical metals (Alumina, Primary Aluminium, Bauxite), leveraging derivatives for hedging and profitable portfolio growth.
  • Build from scratch a scalable Green Aluminium trading franchise—focused on physical trading complemented by derivatives, aligned with our green energy transition priorities.
  • Identify and execute high-value, profitable trading opportunities across the global value chain (upstream and downstream).
  • Originate and structure new business opportunities, leveraging PetroChina’s global network of supply chains, counterparties, and logistics capabilities.
  • Develop executive trading strategies, optimise P&L performance, and contribute to growth within our Green Metals business.
  • Manage supplier and consumer relationships to secure favourable trading terms.
  • Implement hedging strategies to mitigate price volatility risks using financial instruments.
  • Monitor market trends, geopolitics, and carbon dynamics affecting Aluminium and related products (e.g., Bauxite).
  • Work cross-functionally with finance, logistics, risk, and compliance to ensure smooth trade execution.
  • Report and present market insights and strategies to senior management for informed decision-making.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
