Senior Communications Professional – Ministerial Visits and Events
Location: Caxton House, Westminster Base: Central London (minimum 60% official presence required)
About the Role
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)—a transformative force behind welfare and pensions reform—now invites applications from a talented, high-calibre communications professional to join the Ministerial Visits and Events team.
In this strategic and fast-paced role, you will:
- Plan and deliver a high-impact programme of ministerial visits and events
- Offer confident, senior-level advice to Ministers, Special Advisers, and colleagues
- Multitask complex visits and events with tight deadlines and media objectives
- Lead and mentor a team while ensuring excellence in line-management and organisational standards
- Foster key stakeholder relationships across Whitehall, No. 10, and national partners
Work involves regular travel across the UK, overnight stays, and flexibility for last-minute adjustments. Confidence, dynamic leadership, and high-pressure resilience are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Delivery
- Plan and execute a strategic programme of ministerial visits and events, balancing multiple high-profile engagements simultaneously.
- Develop ikhministerial-level written materials (e.g., briefings, itineraries) to critical deadlines, ensuring clarity and impact.
- Align visits and events with ministial communication priorities, optimising media opportunities and wider political contexts.
Team Leadership
- Manage direct reports, fostering a high-performance culture with effective direction, coaching, and development.
- Oversee responsibility for clearances, ensuring subordinates meet quality and deadlines.
- Cover for senior leadership as required, including fill-in duties at Grade 7 team leader level.
Stakeholder & External Engagement
- Collaborate with ministerial colleagues, Special Advisers, and government partners (e.g., No. 10 Downing Street, Press Office) on objectives.
- Navigate complex stakeholder environments to deliver aligned strategies and relational goals.

Work-Demand Notes
- Full-time commitment: Expect extended working hours, overnight travel, and early/late starts (sometimes with minimal notice).

Essential Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate proven expertise in:
- Positioning/launching visits, events, and communications for senior executives, CEOs, or government Ministers.
- Briefing and advising senior stakeholders with factual, coherent, and high-level insight.
- Fast-turnaround editorial work: Drafting/coordinating documents (e.g., briefings, itineraries) under intense deadlines.
- Dynamic multitasking: Balancing concurrent projects while adapting to real-time disruptions.
- Media/political awareness: Identifying or leveraging opportunities (e.g., breaking late news, leading stakeholders’ reach).
- Understanding Whitehall processes/govt priorities for alignment with wider political exigencies.
Technical Assessment Areas
If selected, your application will align with these core Govt Communications Service (GCS) skills:
- Insight (market/application comprehension)

- Implementation (execution and team leadership)

Your journey through the process will include:
- CV + 1,000-word Personal Statement (assessed against Success Profiles, behaviours, and priorities such as Making Effective Decisions and Delivering at Pace).
- Interview: Mixing scenario-based challenges (testing Delivering at Pace and Implementation) and behavioural questioning.
