Strategic Asset & Network Planning Manager
Location: Glasgow HQ Salary: Starting from £55,000 per annum plus excellent benefits Contract: Permanent / Hybrid Closing Date: 13th July 2026

SP Energy Networks, part of the Scottish Power Group, manages electricity transmission and distribution across central and southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire. This key leadership role in the Strategic Asset Management team will shape the future of SPEN’s 400kV transmission network, ensuring compliance with regulatory and business objectives while fostering innovation and development.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Development
- Lead the development and ownership of long-term investment plans for SPEN’s transmission network (up to 400kV), including:
- Transmission network planning
- Load management strategies (onshore/offshore connections, renewable integration, network modernisation)
- Holistic solutions addressing technical and security requirements
- Engage with stakeholders, customers, and regulators on:
- Network development, connection opportunities, and capacity planning
- Ensuring SPEN’s technical position is understood and favourably viewed
Technical & Compliance Leadership
- Oversee technical and commercial investment strategies, policies, and plans, ensuring alignment with:
- Best practice
- Legal and licence requirements
- GB network design standards (e.g., NETS SQSS, Grid Code)
- Define transmission system requirements, evaluate alternative solutions, and propose network designs to maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
- Assess and resolve technical challenges while maximising innovation to optimise cost-effectiveness.
- Apply technical and commercial insights to refine strategies and policies.

Risk Management & Industry Collaboration
- Lead risk assessments for the transmission network, developing mitigation strategies to safeguard operational reliability.
- Represent SPEN in industry working groups and collaborative projects, contributing to:
- Future Energy Scenarios (FES)
- Electricity Ten Year Statement (ETYS)
- Network Options Assessment (NOA)
- Business plans and licence documentation.
Requirements & Skills
Essential Criteria
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience.
- Chartered membership (or pursuit) of the IET (or equivalent professional body).
- Extensive experience in:
- Power system design, analysis, or operations
- Understanding GB grid standards (e.g., NETS SQSS, Grid Code)
- Transmission network operations (asset management, planning standards)
- Knowledge of:
- SPEN’s health, safety, and compliance frameworks
- Legal and licencing obligations
- Regulatory and commercial frameworks affecting transmission networks
- Short/long-term transmission system trends (e.g., renewable integration)
- Electrical asset characteristics (OHL, cables, reactive compensation)
- Offshore/onshore connection requirements and STC processes
- ESO-related documentation (FES, ETYS, NOA)
