Senior Nurse in Prison Healthcare – HMP Swaleside
You will provide high-quality primary care services and a range of specialist interventions for offenders while working within the nurse-led integrated primary care service at HMP Swaleside. The role operates under a specialist practice-based clinical model of care.
About the Role
- Maintain an effective case management system to ensure continuity of care and treatment consistency throughout patient pathways whilst detained in prison.
- Deliver clinics and consultations in a timely and clinically effective manner.
- Implement strategies to promote health, prevent disease, and improve overall well-being within the prison environment.
As part of the Healthcare Team, you will:
- Work as a senior member of staff, coordinating daily operations.
- Support junior colleagues and clinical supervision activities.
- Foster a sense of a community within the prison, offering:
- Urgent care
- Routine health screening (similar to a GP practice)
- Complex care management

Key Responsibilities
You will:

Exercise high personal and professional autonomy, with the ability to make complex, critical judgments and skilled decision-making.

Deliver high-quality clinical care within the Integrated Healthcare Service, covering:
- Acute and primary care
- Management of long-term conditions
- Enhanced assessment and diagnostic intervention services
- Health promotion activities
- Aligning with NHS Plan, public health indicators, and National Service Frameworks.

Demonstrate and provide robust clinical expertise with a strong understanding of evidence-based nursing practice, ensuring a proactive, outcome-driven daily approach.

Actively wear and use a radio and demonstrate competence in leading medical emergency responses.

Support research-based initiatives in the specialty field and include research where applicable when addressing patient needs.

Manage and develop the clinical supervision programme, ensuring:
- Junior staff receive regular, appropriate training and appraisal
- Effective managerial guidance is embedded in team practice.

Implement and sustain patient-centred care planning tools, long-term condition registers, and ensure consistent care delivery across all included prisons.
