Job Overview
Clinical Practice
The post holder will undertake a comprehensive range of specialist occupational health activities, working autonomously to assess, advise and manage employees in relation to their work and health. This includes:
- Assessing fitness for work at pre-employment and during employment, taking account of relevant legislation
- Undertaking complex case management including sickness absence, rehabilitation and return to work planning
- Providing specialist advice on workplace adjustments, disability and equality legislation
- Carrying out health surveillance programmes and interpreting findings
- Undertaking workplace risk assessments and advising on health hazards
- Managing blood and body fluid exposure incidents
- Maintaining accurate, confidential clinical records in line with professional and legal standards.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will act as a senior clinician and role model the following:
Clinical Leadership and Professional Practice
- Providing professional leadership and guidance to the Occupational Health team
- Supporting complex case decision-making
- Upholding clinical standards
- Contributing to governance, audit and continuous improvement of practice.
Service Delivery and Improvement
- Contributing to the planning, delivery and development of Occupational Health services to ensure provision is safe, effective and responsive to organisational and client needs.
Management and Supervision
- Supporting the management and supervision of Occupational Health staff, including mentoring, clinical supervision and contribution to appraisal and development processes.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Providing clear, professional advice and communicating complex and sensitive information appropriately.
Health Promotion and Wellbeing
- Contributing to the development and delivery of health promotion and wellbeing initiatives.
Professional Development
- Maintaining current NMC registration as a SCPHN Occupational Health Nurse.

The Occupational Health Shared Service is hosted by the Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) and is made up of a team of experienced occupational health doctors and nurses, supported by administrators. The majority hold specialist qualifications and many have over 20 years’ experience in occupational health.
The service has a strong commercial customer base providing first class professional Occupational Health Services to other NHS organisations as well as small / medium size enterprises (SME). One of the main objectives for the service over the next five years is to consolidate the shared service across. This is reflected in the job plan.
The Occupational Health Service operates in line with the principles laid down in the NHS Employers “Your occupational health service” guidance October 2019 and the most recently updated SEQOHS standards April 2023.
We place a strong focus on “a high quality, clinically-led, evidence-based service equitable and accessible impartial, approachable and receptive to both clients and employer which contributes to improved organisational productivity for our host Trust / Organisations we serve. The OH service is accredited by SEQOHS’.
Job Purpose
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will deliver, lead and continuously improve a high-quality Occupational Health service, providing specialist advice on employee fitness for work, workplace health protection and health promotion. The role involves autonomous clinical decision-making, complex case management and provision of evidence-based recommendations, alongside responsibility for clinical leadership, staff supervision and contribution to service development and governance.

Essential criteria
- Candidate will be required to be flexible to cover Chelsea & Westminster sites as well as Woodfield Road site
Qualifications / Professional Registration
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
- SCPHN qualification in Occupational Health, or equivalent recognised Occupational Health specialist qualification
- Evidence of significant continuing professional development in occupational health leadership / advanced practice
Desirable criteria
- Management, leadership, teaching or quality improvement qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in Occupational Health practice
- Experience of managing complex occupational health cases and providing specialist advice
- Experience of supervising, mentoring or supporting other staff
- Experience of audit, governance, service improvement or accreditation activity
Desirable criteria
- Experience of contributing to service planning, stakeholder relationships or contract / service development
Knowledge and Understanding
Essential criteria
- Advanced knowledge of occupational health practice across fitness for work, workplace health protection and health promotion
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, professional standards and current best practice affecting occupational health
- Knowledge of clinical governance, audit and quality improvement requirements
- Understanding of leadership, supervision and service delivery within a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of performance / activity reporting and service evaluation
Skills And Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to lead complex case management and make advanced clinical decisions
- Ability to provide authoritative written and verbal occupational health advice to managers and stakeholders
- Ability to support, supervise and develop other staff
- Ability to contribute to planning, delivery and improvement of occupational health services
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities
- Good IT skills, including use of occupational health records and standard office systems
