Occupational Therapist – Acute Discharge Services
An exciting opportunity has arisen for Occupational Therapists to join our innovative, pro-active occupancy services team within Acute Discharge Services based at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.
We follow a home-first approach and work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to assist with discharge from hospital at the earliest opportunity.
About the Role
The Occupational Therapy Team is responsible for providing high-quality occupational therapy services that empower patients to regain independence and optimise recovery across North Tyneside, Northumberland, and surrounding areas.
This senior post offers a diverse range of clinical experiences, including but not limited to:
- Care of the Elderly
- Acute and Emergency Medicine
- Surgery
- Respiratory Care
- Orthopaedics
The role includes opportunities for development in clinical specialisation, leadership, and quality improvement, including involvement in:
- Service development and audits
- Research initiatives
- Training and supervision
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice & Service Delivery
- Deliver individualised, evidence-based occupational therapy to enhance health, well-being, and independence
- Work collaboratively with the MDT to facilitate timely discharges and optimise patient pathways
- Support hallmark-recognised therapeutic interventions to restore functional abilities post-illness or injury
- Manage and delegate tasks appropriately, working alongside OT Technical Instructors and support workers
- Provide supervision and mentorship to students on clinical placements

Leadership & Quality Assurance
- Adhere to the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) Code of Ethics and national/trust procedural guidelines
- Drive service improvements and ensure seamless care pathways across multiple sites
- Champion equitable, patient-centred care, respecting individuality, culture, religion, and diversity
- Engage with audit, research, and quality improvement projects to enhance practice
Team Collaboration & Clinical Governance
- Foster a collaborative culture with evidence-based practice at its core
- Deliver individualised care focused on independence and recovery
- Ensure policy compliance, including person-centred rights (such as advocacy and equality)
Core Working Pattern
- Standard working hours: 0830 – 1630 (Monday to Friday)
- Rostered weekend shifts may be required in line with service needs
- On-call availability: Cover hours are 8am – 8pm, 7 days per week when required
Location & Service Scope
We provide care across:
- Three major locality hospitals: North Tyneside, Wansbeck, and Hexham
- Smaller community hospitals & clinics (Tynemouth to Berwick-on-Tweed)
- Cutting-edge facilities: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (first of its type in England)
- Patient homes and community-based health centres to empower home-first care where possible
