Senior Oil Crude Oil Operator
Location: Major Oil Trading House – London Salary: £90-100k Basic + bondus & benefits
A leading global asset-backed commodity trading house, owned by a major oil company, is seeking an experienced Senior Crude Oil Operator to join their Central London HQ.
About the Role
You will join a major global trading business with offices in Singapore, Geneva, and Houston, working closely with traders, analysts, and other operators within the commodities team. Your core responsibility will be to manage the day-to-day trading operations for crude oil and related commodities. The role offers exposure to the full commodity-trading lifecycle, involving collaboration with:
- Oil & Freight Trading
- Shipping Operations
- Scheduling
- Credit & Middle Office
- Back Office
- Insurance
- Legal
- Finance
- Contracts
The position requires flexibility to facilitate knowledge-sharing and help cover shifts across the operations team. Additionally, this is an exciting opportunity to work within a growing commodity trading house focused on innovation, career development, and global network expansion.
This role is a potential stepping stone towards becoming a Lead Operator or Head of Operations.

Team & Responsibilities
This role forms part of a team of 6 operators (ranging in seniority) supporting 4 traders who handle crude cargoes, primarily within the North Sea region (e.g., varying grades from the UK and Norway, but also global shipping).
The role entails end-to-end operational processes (with settlements/finance outsourced to separate teams), involving internal and external liaison to ensure cargoes are delivered to buyers efficiently.
External stakeholders include:
- Refineries
- Storage terminals
- Inspections firms
Core Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day trading operations for crude oil commodities
- Oversee key documentation, including:
- Proforma invoices
- Vessel nominations
- Letters of credit (L/C)
- Provisional and final cargo insurance
- Narrowing/nomination of dates and quantities
- Vessel clearance
- Assist with ancillary cost management (e.g., demurrage, freight differentials, deviation costs, dead freight)
- Resolve cost-related issues, supporting demurrage and related teams
- Update company cargo databases to ensure real-time data accuracy
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and external regulations (REACH, customs)
- Coordinate with inspection firms for cargo quality and quantity controls
- Manage storage locations and perform stock reconciliations
- Work with the sanctions team to mitigate company risks
- Maintain strong internal and external relationships to enhance operational efficiency
- Collaborate with terminals, inspection teams, and counterparties

Key Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience in a European Crude Oil Operator role (preferably with another major oil trading business)
- In-depth understanding of:
- The oil-trading lifecycle (cargoes, time charters, voyage charters, quality/quantity controls, storage)
- Cargo documentation, including Boeftm terms, B/I (Bill of Lading), inspections, port receipts, L/Cs, and customs
- Strong communication & stakeholder management skills—critical for collaboration across internal/external teams
- British or Irish passport or visa allowing unrestricted work in the UK
