Senior OpenShift Platform Engineer

Company: Boeing Defence United Kingdom Limited

This is a hands-on role for a Senior OpenShift Platform Engineer to join the Infrastructure Team, jointly responsible for the day-to-day support and maintenance of the Red Hat OpenShift Container platform and the wider Red Hat Linux server estate. The team provides critical support to multiple programmes of work, including Ministry of Defence Information Services (MoD IS).


Key Responsibilities

  • Red Hat OpenShift Enterprise Implementation & Support

    • Ensure availability, reliability, and performance of OpenShift/Container Platform
    • Installation, maintenance, and configuration of production and non-production OpenShift environments
  • Operational Excellence & Patching

    • Perform patching, software implementations, and upgrades to Red Hat OpenShift platforms
    • Automate patching and monitoring activities, including working with service management tools for incidents, problems, service requests, and changes
    • Contribute to automation strategies to improve SLA and KPI adherence
  • Collaboration & Improvement

    • Work closely with cross-functional teams to enhance delivery efficiency
    • Analyse problem statements and propose mitigation strategies
    • Provide input on design reviews for container platforms and automation toolchains
  • Migration & On-Call Support

    • Lead service and application migration activities (Red Hat Enterprise Linux & OpenShift Cluster Platform)
    • Serve on 24x7 on-call rota (~1 in 5 shifts), providing extended-hours support

Basic Qualifications (Required)

  • Hands-on experience with:
    • OpenShift upgrades, installations, and configuration (ideally managed large-scale migrations and deployments)
    • OpenShift Administration (RHSxA credentials highly desired)
    • Container monitoring (metrics and troubleshooting tools)
  • Ability to write scripts for OpenShift automation (e.g., daily tasks, CI/CD pipelines)
  • Thorough understanding of:
    • OpenShift v3.x & v4.x (focusing on Operators, Registry, Networking, and CI/CD tools)
    • Docker, Kubernetes, containerization technologies, and Red Hat OpenShift integration
  • UNIX and Red Hat administration experience (RHEL 8 & RHEL 9).
  • Automation competency (preference for Ansible, Ansible Tower, GitLab, or Jenkins).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired)

  • DevOps/CI/CD process experience (architecture or engineering).
  • Red Hat Certifications:
    • RHSA
    • RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer)
    • Red Hat Certified Specialist in Containers & Kubernetes
    • Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration
  • Fluency in one or more scripting languages (e.g., Ruby, PowerShell, Python, or Java).
  • Experience working in secure, high-availability environments.
