Microsoft Research – Senior Technical Program Manager

Overview

At Microsoft Research, we are shaping the future of AI infrastructure by pursuing high-risk and high-reward programs that will define the next generation of AI platforms. Our work spans the full technology stack—models, systems, software, and hardware—and we collaborate closely with product teams across Microsoft to transform research breakthroughs into scalable, impactful solutions. Through partnerships with industry leaders, the team bridges cutting-edge research and mass production, driving hardware innovation into functional prototypes and manufacturable solutions for future-ready AI infrastructure.

You will join a multidisciplinary team working at the intersection of optics, electronics, photonics, packaging, networking, and AI system design.

As a Senior Technical Program Manager, your role will involve translating early-stage insights from Microsoft Research (MSR) and applied research into tangible, shippable products and services. You will:

  • Partner closely with researchers to refine and formalise technical concepts into strategic product roadmaps
  • Drive execution across Azure engineering teams to deliver these capabilities at cloud-scale AI systems
  • Manage relationships with external partners in hardware and software supply chains, ensuring critical dependencies are met on time and within specifications

Your responsibilities will extend across every stage—from prototype development to general availability (GA). This opportunity will allow you to:

  • Expand your technical expertise across both frontier research and large-scale cloud contingency settings
  • Build a network that influences critical decisions across Microsoft Research, Azure, and the global supplier ecosystem
  • Establish a leadership footprint at the junction of innovation and production

Mission and Culture

Microsoft’s mission is to empower everyone—individuals and organisations—on the planet to achieve exceptional outcomes. Our commitment hinges on a growth mindset: we innovate to amplify collective impact and collaborate in the pursuit of shared goals. Rooted in the principles of respect, integrity, and accountability, our culture thrives on inclusion and fosters spaces where all employees can flourish.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Responsibilities

  • Translate research into shippable cloud AI products: Convert early-stage Microsoft Research discoveries and applied innovations into scalable, production-ready AI cloud capabilities.
  • Collaborate broadly: Work with MSR researchers, Azure engineering teams, and external hardware/software vendors to develop technical solutions that bridge từ models, systems, and hardware.
  • Evaluate trade-offs and propose recommendations: Identify the practical risks, challenges, and benefits of proposed solutions and present data-driven decisions to technical leads, engineering teams, and supplier partners.
  • Define success criteria: Establish measurable goals for moving research prototypes into general availability (GA), including technical thresholds, launch requirements, and performance baselines.
  • Own end-to-end program execution: Oversee program structure (roadmap, timelines, staging, and rollout) and governance for efforts that span MSR, Azure, and the supplier ecosystem—across multiple teams or quarters.
  • Improve via feedback loops: Monitor production environments to validate use cases, measure performance and reliability metrics at AI cloud scale, and incorporate insights to continually inform future investment decisions.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree in computer engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, computer science, physics, applied physics, optics/photonics, materials science, or a related field.
