The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior or Principal Civil Engineer to join our Rivers and Coastal Management team in Cambridge or Reading, supporting a portfolio of interesting projects across an increasingly busy and critical sector.

This position offers the opportunity to be involved in the design and management of a diverse range of river and coastal projects including lowland drainage, flood risk management schemes, river engineering, and supporting strategic developments for a variety of public and private sector clients. You’ll be involved in some of the some of the largest and most important flood risk management projects in the region, protecting people, properties and infrastructure from flooding, and improving habitats for nature.

We’re looking for someone experienced in the design, coordination and delivery of projects, with excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities. You’ll be working across all project stages from concept to completion, including construction stage support, using your experience to make sound engineering decisions.

Why Stantec?

When we say community, we mean everybody with a stake in the work we do, from the clients we collaborate with across many sectors, to the populations we reach, to the thousands of us working together to serve them. Our promise, our values, and our voice support our purpose and guide us in all that we do.

We are defined by more than our services. We are defined by what we stand for, what we believe, and why we do what we do. We make a difference in the world by creating communities.

As a key member of our Rivers and Coastal Management team, your role will involve the following:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
