About the role
At National Grid, we're powering the energy transition and connecting millions of people to cleaner, greener energy. Our Interconnectors business plays a vital role in supporting the UK's journey to net zero, operating critical HVDC interconnectors that connect the UK with neighbouring energy markets.
As we continue to expand our portfolio and invest in the future of energy, we're looking for a Senior Operational Technology (OT) Engineer to help ensure our operational systems remain resilient, secure, and available around the clock.
In this role, you'll be responsible for the performance, maintenance, security and lifecycle management of critical OT systems, networks and cyber assets that underpin the safe operation of our interconnectors. Working across a portfolio of nationally important infrastructure, you'll combine hands-on engineering expertise with a strong focus on cyber security, operational resilience and continuous improvement.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of operational technology, networking and cyber security while making a tangible contribution to the UK's energy future.
The role is based on site at Fareham therefore we will consider candidates who are within an hours commute to site and have a full UK driving licence.
What you'll do
As a Senior Operational Technology Engineer, you will:
- Lead the installation, maintenance, refurbishment and fault resolution of OT systems, networking equipment and cyber assets.
- Design, implement and manage improvements to operational technology and cyber security systems.
- Support the delivery of new projects, including procurement, tendering and technical design activities.
- Manage routine operational activities including system updates, backups, patching, antivirus management and access reviews.
- Monitor system performance, asset health and reliability, identifying opportunities to improve resilience and availability.
- Support incident response, recovery planning and restoration activities across critical operational systems.
- Work closely with operational teams to develop, test and refine incident response and business continuity plans.
- Manage changes to hardware, software and network infrastructure through robust change control processes.
- Oversee physical and logical security controls across OT environments, helping protect critical national infrastructure.
- Lead assurance, audit and compliance activities, ensuring adherence to regulatory and cyber security requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and training to operational teams, supporting capability development across the business.
- Support maintenance and project delivery activities across the wider Interconnectors portfolio, including occasional travel to sites.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
