About the Role
Based in our Edinburgh or Glasgow office, LUC is seeking an enthusiastic and versatile Senior Planner to support strategic and development planning projects across Scotland and the UK.
LUC is proud of making an impact across a diverse range of project scales, offering strategic planning services such as:
- Policy development and plan-making support
- Evidence-based work and integrated impact assessments
- Research, evaluation, and training across climate change and green infrastructure
- Strategies and delivery plans for nature recovery, agri-environment policy, minerals and waste
The team also supports development planning projects, ranging from minor upgrades to public spaces, visitor facilities, education, and renewable energy development (wind, grid, solar, and storage).
Supported by senior colleagues, this role offers valuable experience across planning projects, with opportunities to work collaboratively with environmental consultancy teams, including:
- Historic environment
- Ecology
- GIS
- Landscape planning
As our team scales, we aim to enhance project management capacity at the Senior Planner level. The role involves active leadership in small to medium projects, or assisting project managers on large projects, including:
- Attending client meetings
- Collaborating on budgets and timelines
- Report preparation
- Direct client engagement and quality management adherence
Key Responsibilities
- Manage or support project team coordination, including assigning and overseeing junior consultants.
- Contribute to tender preparation and business development.
- Build professional contacts, engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and networking.
- Provide insights within the Planning team on emerging best practices.

The role offers a unique opportunity to participate in business ownership through LUC’s Employee Ownership Trust, where employees collectively own the company.
Work Arrangements
- Office locations: Edinburgh or Glasgow (hybrid model: minimum two days per week in office).
- Travel required: Field visits, client meetings, and multi-site project work.
- Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week, Mon–Fri).
- Flexibility: Part-time options (minimum 30 hours) and discussions regarding tailored hours.
Salary: £32,500 – £39,500 (FTE), based on experience.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Degree level or equivalent qualification in planning, geography, or environmental science.
- In-depth knowledge of UNK environmental planning and wider UK policy.
- Experience supporting strategic planning projects across consultancy, local authority, or government.
- Strong research, analysis, report writing, and numeracy skills.
- Exceptional communication skills with a proactive approach to client and team engagement.
- Willingness to work towards MRTPI status.
Desirable

Impact assessment experience, e.g., Sustainability Appraisal, Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA), Health and Equalities Impact Assessments.

Planning application support, including submitting or dealing with applications, drafting planning statements, or committee reports.

Specialisation knowledge in climate change, renewables, green infrastructure, open space, or nature recovery.

Candidate requirements: Must be eligible to live and work in the UK.
