Senior Planning Enforcement Officer

How You’ll Make a Difference

As a Senior Planning Enforcement Officer, you will play a vital role in making South Gloucestershire a safe, sustainable, and attractive place to live, work, and visit. Working as part of a dedicated team, you will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality built environment, helping to protect and enhance the area for the benefit and enjoyment of all residents and visitors.


Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Lead a small team of Planning Enforcement Investigators, including:
    • Overseeing initial site visits to identify breaches of planning control
    • Managing compliance monitoring
    • Handling matters relating to the Community Infrastructure Levy
  • Manage a caseload of 40-60 cases of varying complexity, progressing them effectively and timely to resolution.
  • Support team members in managing their own caselovers and deputise for line managers as required.
  • Investigate alleged breaches of planning control.
  • Determine planning applications, prepare and defend appeals, and take legal proceedings where necessary.
    • Gain end-to-end experience of the planning process, including:
      • Pre-application advice
      • Application handling
      • Post-decision work
  • Respond to internal and external enquiries, providing professional advice and delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service.
  • Exercise sound judgement and make informed decisions, especially when dealing with complex or unprecedented cases.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential Requirements

  • Hold a professional qualification in town planning, a relevant transferable degree, or demonstrate equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience working in planning enforcement, with the ability to:
    • Provide guidance and support to colleagues within the team
  • Strong understanding of planning legislation and its practical application.
  • Confident communicator, both verbal and written, with skills in diplomacy and sound judgment for handling difficult situations.
  • Strong organisational skills and proficiency in managing workloads while meeting deadlines.

Working Conditions

You will:

  • Predominantly work from an office, with site visits required for casework.
  • Travel is required for the role; you must hold a full, current valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle.
