Senior / Principal Planner – Oxford2050 Project

The opportunity to shape the future of Oxford through Oxford2050, a landmark planning strategy consolidating hundreds of public consultation responses. The Planning team – a dynamic, results-driven collective – strengthens the city by balancing growth with inclusivity.
About the Role
Through the Development Management team, Oxford City Council oversees groundbreaking projects that have redefined the city’s skyline and character, including:
- £440m £440m Westgate Shopping Centre
- 885-home urban extension at Barton
- Mixed-use development at Oxford North
- Purpose-built schemes for prestigious historic employers, governed by the constraints of a globally renowned city.
This role represents a unique chance to lead as a Senior / Principal Planner within the strategic team. The position is fast-paced and largely rare for a UK local authority environment.
Your Impact & Responsibilities
- Work across five strategic pillars: Work and learning, People and communities, Built and natural environment, Transport and connectivity, and Culture and leisure.
- Progress Major applications through the Local Authority planning process.
- Deliver on high-profile partnership initiatives, including transformative residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects.

Requirements & Success Factors
- Proven experience handling strategic and complex planning applications within a UK local authority framework.
- A demonstrated ability to operate under pressure, initiating immediate impact within a collaborative workspace.
- Familiarity with supports protecting Oxford’s nature and heritage in high-growth contexts.
- Experience driving change through processes such as joint working, stakeholder consultation, SACTs, and winning planning applications.
Please note: You can be newly qualified or a few years into your career, if you are convinced you can deliver under pressure, output with strong consistent volumes and outcomes.
