Senior Planning Officer - Strategic Major Sites

Senior Planning Officer – Planning Major Sites Team

How You'll Make a Difference

As a Senior Planning Officer, you will take a lead role in delivering newly identified strategic development sites, helping to create thriving, sustainable communities for current and future generations. Working at the forefront of place-making, you will ensure that new developments provide high-quality environments, infrastructure, and services that enable residents to live, work, and enjoy themselves.

The Planning Service is entering an exciting time for development, with the draft Local Plan currently progressing through Examination in Public and anticipated to be adopted in 2027. In addition, part of the district has been shortlisted for the Government’s New Town Programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the lead officer for strategic development, project managing applications for various sites
  • Provide technical expertise in the delivery of the council’s Major Sites planning and other corporate policy objectives
    • Manage consultations, prepare reports, and formulate well-reasoned recommendations for determination in accordance with council policies, procedures, and statutory requirements
  • Support the development of junior colleagues, including:
    • Mentoring, knowledge sharing, and team training initiatives
    • Providing guidance and regular opportunities for learning through one-on-one meetings
  • Respond to enquiries, concerns, complaints, and Freedom of Information requests, ensuring all matters are handled professionally, efficiently, and within council timescales
  • Collaborate with planners, urban design officers, landscape architects, ecologists, and public open space officers as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
