Requirements of the role
We’re offering two permanent opportunities to join our Major Projects Directorate at a pivotal time for Britain’s energy infrastructure transformation. You’ll play a leading role in developing policies that support major electricity and gas network upgrades, working on flagship programmes that will help unlock investment, strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. This is an exciting chance to influence nationally significant projects within one of our most high-profile and fast-moving directorates.
We’re looking for individuals with a strong background in the energy sector, or another major infrastructure sector, alongside proven policy development and project leadership capabilities. You’ll be an accomplished communicator and collaborator, able to analyse complex issues, develop strategic solutions and build productive relationships that support effective decision-making.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
