Senior Practitioner for Children in Care

Location: Hybrid (based in Birmingham) About Birmingham Children’s Trust

This exciting role offers a great opportunity to develop your leadership skills and progress your career pathway in Social Work. As a Senior Practitioner for Children in Care, you will hold up to a number of complex families while also supporting and developing good practice and consistent performance within your team alongside the Team Manager.

You will coordinate and facilitate group supervision, advising and guiding social workers in their work with children and families, as well as progressing tasks delegated by the Team Manager.


Mission & Work Focus

Birmingham Children’s Trust is dedicated to providing outstanding care to children and families across Birmingham. The Children in Care Team works with children and young people aged 0-18 who are subject to:

  • Interim and Final Care Orders
  • Section 20 placements (including foster care, residential, and semi-supported settings)

We provide joined-up services and develop robust partnerships with:

  • The police
  • Health services
  • Schools
  • Voluntary organisations

Our priority is achieving permanency for children while ensuring safe reunification where suitable.


Role Summary

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead in improving professional social work practice across the breach of casework cycle for children, young people, and families.
  • Provide a needs-led, professional social work service, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and best practice.
  • Undertake complex casework in children and family services.
  • Share and communicate a thorough knowledge of:
    • Relevant legislation
    • National standards and guidance
    • Research
    • Departmental policy and procedures
  • Manage a complex caseload, including staffing and supervision responsibilities.
  • Promote joined-up service working, encouraging collaboration with service users, teams, and external agencies.
  • Provide quality assurance, coaching, and mentoring to work colleagues.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in a hybrid role based in Birmingham (must be within a commutable distance).
  • Right-to-work documents to work in the UK.
  • Advanced qualifications in Social Work (or equivalent).
  • Experience in child protection, care proceedings, and safeguarding.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and partnership-building abilities.
