Senior Primary Electrical Design Engineer – Up to £90,000 + Excellent Benefits – Leeds, West Yorkshire
The Role
Are you an experienced Electrical Design Engineer ready to take the lead on complex EHV and HV substation projects? Looking for a role where your expertise will help shape the future of the UK's electricity network while offering genuine career progression?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Primary Electrical Design Engineer to join the growing team at Primary Power Consulting. Based in Leeds, you'll work on a diverse portfolio of transmission, distribution, renewable energy, battery energy storage, and grid connection projects across the UK.
You’ll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and concept design through to detailed design and construction support. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers, project managers, and technical specialists, helping to deliver practical engineering solutions on projects ranging from 11kV distribution systems to 132kV transmission-connected substations.

Key Responsibilities:
- Produce primary electrical designs for EHV and HV substations up to 132kV.
- Develop single line diagrams, substation layouts, equipment schedules, and technical specifications.
- Complete feasibility studies, concept designs, and detailed engineering activities.
- Prepare specifications for transformers, switchgear, cables, overhead line interfaces, and associated plant.
- Produce engineering calculations and supporting technical documentation.
- Support AIS and GIS substation projects.
- Coordinate with protection and control, civil engineering, and project delivery teams.
- Attend design reviews and technical workshops with clients and project stakeholders.
- Ensure designs meet National Grid, DNO, ICP, and industry standards.
- Support tender submissions and mentor graduate and junior engineers where appropriate.

The Person
- Degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience designing EHV and HV substations
- Strong knowledge of transformers, switchgear, cables, overhead line interfaces, and primary plant
- Experience producing layouts, equipment schedules, and technical specifications
- Knowledge of National Grid, DNO, ICP, renewable energy, or battery storage projects is advantageous
- Experience with AIS and/or GIS substations
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams
- A commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions
- Full UK driving licence
