Principal or Senior Principal Consultant in Environmental and Radioactive Waste Management – Stantec’s Nuclear Team
The Opportunity
Stantec’s Nuclear team is expanding rapidly, having secured spots on major multi-year frameworks. We’re seeking a Principal or Senior Principal Consultant in Environmental and Radioactive Waste Management to join our growing team across locations including Warrington, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, Northampton, or Cambridge.
This role offers the chance to work with diverse clients—from Gigawatt-scale and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) developers to nuclear site licensees, waste management organisations, regulators, and the defence sector—shaping the future of the nuclear industry across the entire nuclear lifecycle, including new build, operations, decommissioning, and radioactive waste management.
About the Role
As a Principal or Senior Principal Consultant, you’ll take on a senior leadership position within Stantec’s Nuclear team, delivering specialist environmental and radioactive waste consultancy to both UK and international clients. Your key responsibilities will include:
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
- Lead the development of waste strategies, environmental safety cases, permitting strategies, and regulatory compliance programmes for nuclear new build and decommissioning projects.
- Provide technical expertise to help clients navigate environmental, radioactive waste management, and regulatory compliance challenges.
- Uphold safety and sustainability standards while balancing operational, environmental, regulatory, and commercial priorities.
Business Growth & Client Engagement
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities, developing strong client relationships.
- Lead bid processes and technical proposal preparation to secure contracts.
- Represent Stantec as a strategic advisor to high-level stakeholders.
Team Development & Organizational Growth
- Mentor colleagues, build team capability, and foster a high-performing consultancy culture.
- Contribute to process improvement, standards development, and continuous excellence in project delivery.

About You – Key Requirements
You’ll bring a strong technical background coupled with executive-level skills in both project delivery and business growth. Essential criteria include:
- 10+ years of experience in environmental or radioactive waste management, with a focus on nuclear sector consultancy.
- A science, engineering, or environmental qualification (postgraduate preferred).
- Proven expertise in:
- Environmental permitting
- Radioactive waste management
- Environmental safety cases & regulatory compliance
- Waste strategy and decommissioning planning
- Direct experience working with nuclear licensed sites and regulatory bodies.
- Business development acumen, including bid leadership, client relationship management, and commercial strategy.
- Project management excellence – experience in cost control, governance, and risk management.
- Ability to lead, mentor, and develop multidisciplinary teams.
- Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (at least BPSS level).
Desirable Experience
- Specialisation in BAT/BPM assessments, site end-state planning, or waste strategy.
- Exposure to Earned Value Management (EVM) methodologies.
- Experience on large-scale, multi-disciplinary nuclear infrastructure programmes.
