Principal / Senior Principal Consultant – Environmental & Radioactive Waste Management

The Opportunity

Stantec’s Nuclear team is entering an exciting phase of growth. Having secured positions on several significant multi-year frameworks, we are expanding our capability to support some of the most challenging and impactful projects across the nuclear sector.

We are hiring for a Principal or Senior Principal Consultant in Environmental and Radioactive Waste Management to join our growing UK team. Opportunities exist to be based in Warrington, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, Northampton, or Cambridge.

This role offers the chance to work with world-leading clients including:

  • Gigawatt-scale and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) developers
  • Nuclear site licensees
  • Waste management organisations
  • Regulators
  • Defence sector

You’ll have the unique opportunity to shape the future of the nuclear industry, supporting the entire nuclear lifecycle—from new build and operational facilities through to decommissioning and radioactive waste management.


About the Role

As a Principal or Senior Principal Consultant, you will serve as senior technical and commercial leader within our Nuclear team, delivering bespoke environmental and radioactive waste consultancy for clients across the UK and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership:

    • Lead complex project delivery in environmental and radioactive waste management, supporting clients through:
      • Waste strategy development
      • Environmental safety cases
      • Permitting strategies
      • Regulatory compliance programmes
    • Ensure alignment with evolving regulatory requirements (e.g., Environment Agency, ONR, due diligence assessments)
    • Solve multifaceted challenges spanning technical, environmental, regulatory, and commercial factors
  • Business Development:

    • Actively contribute to the growth of the Nuclear business by:
      • Identifying and pursuing commercial opportunities
      • Developing client relationships
      • Leading tender bids and technical proposal writing
    • Collaborate with teams to shape new service offerings as market needs evolve
  • Team & People Growth:

    • Mentor junior consultants and build capability within the team
    • Foster a high-performing, inclusive culture that drives excellence in delivery
    • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance internal processes and standards

  • External Engagement:
    • Represent Stantec at industry events, regulators, and client-facing meetings

Your Impact

Your work will directly contribute to: ✔ Safer, sustainable nuclear infrastructure through proactive risk mitigation ✜ Success in consenting, commissioning, and decommissioning nuclear facilities ✔ Advancement of next-generation nuclear technologies (e.g., SMRs, advanced reactors) ✔ Aligning nuclear operations with environmental and regulatory imperatives

Beyond delivery, you will play a pivotal role in forging Stantec’s reputation as a leader in the nuclear sector through innovative solutions, client trust-building, and talent development.


About You

You are a highly experienced environmental or radioactive waste professional eager to lead and grow within an expanding sector. We are looking for technical expertise combined with commercial drive.

What You Bring

Essential

  • 10+ years’ experience in nuclear environmental or waste management consultancy (or comparable high-hazard industries)
  • Proven ability to deliver technical reports, safety cases, and regulatory submissions for nuclear clients
  • Expertise in:
    • Environmental permitting processes
    • Radioactive waste management strategies
    • Earned Value Management or project finance methodologies
    • Stakeholder/regulatory engagement (e.g., ONR, EA, Environment Wales)
  • Business development experience, including:
    • Bid/tender leadership
    • Market opportunity assessments
  • Strong team leadership with experience in mentoring, training, and capability building
  • Demonstrated commercial awareness within consultancy environments
  • Security clearance eligibility (concessional or basic personnel security standard minimum)

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Specialisation in:
    • Decommissioning complex waste streams
    • Leakage/pathway assessment techniques
    • Site end-state planning
  • Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM) methodologies
